Syracuse-based flutist Lana Stafford earned her bachelor’s and master's degrees in flute performance at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) and is an active member of the Central New York classical music community. Over the last five years, Lana has given numerous flute recitals in collaborative performance duos with pianists Sabine Krantz and Chris Spinelli, in addition to performing extensively with the Society for New Music. Administratively Lana has worked behind the scenes in multiple arts organizations from Symphoria and Civic Morning Musicals to the Society for New Music and Central New York Association of Music Teachers. She managed the Symphoria Youth Orchestras for two seasons and was the graduate assistant to the University at Buffalo Summer Strings Workshop for five years.
Other performance highlights include the Syracuse Chamber Orchestra, Civic Morning Musicals, Syracuse Vocal Ensemble, Hamilton College Orchestra, Breadcrumbs Productions, Staten Island Arts LUMEN Festival, Slee Sinfonietta, and curating chamber music for weddings and special events. While in grad school Lana and percussionist Michelle Purdy commissioned several new works, with premieres in Manhattan, University at Buffalo, and University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Her principal flute teachers included John Oberbrunner, Barry Crawford, and Cheryl Gobbetti Hoffman. Further studies include the Scottish International Flute Summer School in St. Andrews plus masterclasses with Ian Clarke, Wissam Boustany, Mario Caroli, Trevor Wye, Tara Helen O’Connor, Gary Schocker, and others.
Lana belongs to the Westcott Music Collective, Central New York Association of Music Teachers, National Association for Music Educators, and American Federation of Musicians Local 78. She has been teaching flutists of all ages since 2010 and is a member of the Board of Directors at Society for New Music.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Starting with evaluating goals and playing levels, we then move into establishing a natural sound, ease in moving between notes, and bringing attention to creating music. We set up a practice routine that we adjust as the student makes progress.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I earned my Bachelor's and Master's in Flute Performance during which time I was also the Flute Teaching Assistant.

Lana’s Flute Studio in north Syracuse ($50/hr, $35/half hr. Same rates for virtual lessons if/when needed)

If you prefer that I travel to teach at your residence, add $10 travel fee ($60/hr), subject to change if more than 20 miles away.
