I'm a late bloomer when it comes to playing the guitar. It took me years of perseverance to get my playing to a respectable level of competency. Because of my deep desire to learn how to play, I was able to truly understand and experience all the many pitfalls that lied ahead. Many of the things I have learned I wish I learned earlier in my development as it would have saved me years of time. I have been fortunate to have some very good teachers and this has helped greatly in building my confidence and seeing another perspective. The guitar is an amazing instrument. It has a wonderfully versatile sound, is portable and universal in its tone. ... View Profile

Almost all private music instructors are musicians who have performed and been recorded professionally. But, being a great guitarist or vocalist doesn't necessarily mean one has the skills to competently teach others to sing or play guitar effectively. Our teachers are specifically trained in how to teach music. We receive yearly training in music pedagogy from an international group of music educators (Elite Guitar Teachers Inner Circle) that allows us to deliver cutting-edge techniques to help our students reach their goals. We often hear private music teachers say that they don't use a specific curriculum - their lessons are indivi ... View Profile

I have been playing guitar for over 30 years. I mostly play play rock and roll but like to mix it up with some blues, blue grass, folk, rhythm and blues, and even some punk or heavy metal once in a while.  I don't hold any music degrees but I did grow up with a mother that taught piano for 40 years and I did take some music theory classes in high school and college. I definitely understand more than enough music theory than is necessary for rock and roll. I think students should understand what they are playing as far as the keys, scales, chord progressions etc in the songs. but should ultimately rely on their ear when learning and playi ... Practical application of a student's music theory can help them perform/recite better. I teach in a laid-back, fun approach to playing the instrument. Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

Don DeBold Music Instruction

Don DeBold · Lake Katrine, NY

About Don

My name is Don DeBold and my love of guitar began on Christmas Day when I was 9 years old and received my first guitar. I first learned the basics and soon began taking Classical Guitar instruction from re-known instructor and performer Ignaccio Vecchio. Years later my interest in other styles would bloom. In my late teens my touring career as Lead Guitarist in various Rock and Metal bands ensued with such bands as Black Rose, the Answer, and Rise throughout the Northeastern, U.S.A.

Years later I became a husband and father and discovered a love of teaching as well as performing. Over the past 20 or so years my performing has been generally as Solo Classical Guitarist for weddings and events(such as the black-tie U.S. Marines Birthday bash in Newburgh, N.Y. … YEAH, BIG BUCKS ! … and everything reasonably local) while having the privilege of sharing my knowledge and guidance with many students.

Because I teach such styles as Classical and Flamenco Guitar(including ABRSM exam prep.), Blues, Rock, Shred, Metal, Jazz, Country, and General Instruction for just having fun for all ages and levels I tailor instruction to my students’ goals, not mine. Though many of my students have gone on to have performing careers many others just wanted to play the guitar for their own enjoyment. The exhilaration I get when a student gets over a hump and suddenly “gets it” with that smile of joy and accomplishment is priceless!

I have been a staff instructor at Imperial Guitar and Soundworks when they were located in Newburgh, N.Y. for 12 years and at the New York School of Music in Walden, N.Y. but would like to focus more at instruction from my home in Lake Katrine, N.Y.

I hope we can have fun with guitar lessons soon. Music instruction should of course be fun as well as for technique practice and theory. After all, despite what many of my peers believe, this shouldn’t be confused with Navy Seals Training !

Yours Truly,

Don DeBold
