I've been performing in the Greater Columbus area for over 20 years; from Classical to Jazz to Irish Fiddle. I have performed with several local Irish groups and have performed at the Dublin Irish Festival for the last 15 years. I offer Violin and Viola lessons as well as Ear Training. Instrumental lessons can be a traditional focus, or focus on fiddle or improv styles. The goal is to provide students with the musical instruction they need, not just the instruction they'll pay for.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first step with a new student is to discuss availability. Once we've found a day and time that works for everyone we have our first lesson. If a student is a true beginner we dive right into the basics. If a student has some experience then we assess their level and give pointers that we want them to start addressing in their practice. There is no "starter lesson". All lessons are an opportunity for growth and improvement, and we try encourage students to find those moments as often as possible.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in Violin Performance and perform regularly in the Columbus area in several Irish Folk groups.
I have been teaching for over 20 years and continues to grow my student base through outreach, including volunteer work in the local schools. My belief is that Private and Public Music Education should work hand in hand to provide students with a complete experience.
I focus on technique and quality sound control, and encourage students to try new styles of music to expand their understanding of what the instrument can do as well discover sounds they may not have kniwn they would enjoy.

Most lessons are 30 minutes long and cost $30. Payment is made on a monthly basis.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching privately in college at Ohio University. After I graduated I continued to teach while pursuing performance opportunities with local ochestras, wedding venues, and alternative bands.
Teaching is something I find very rewarding. A student does not need to aspire to perform professionally to want to play well, and it's a wonderful experience to provide another person with the skills necessary to enjoy music privately or through public performance.

I have worked with students at all levels; 6 to 60, begninner to advanced, Classical, Jazz, Folk, Rock, individuals, and groups.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Personal connections are important. If your gut feeling tells you to trust them, then give it a shot. If your gut says "no", then move on to the next. It's important that you trust the person you will be stuck in a room with for 30 minutes, once every week.
Also, be ready to work. Teachers can't make you better, only you can make you better. If you don't put in the time to practice what your teacher gives you then you will never make the progress you want.
