About

I teach traditional violin and viola to students from age 7 to adult, with emphasis on reading skills, technique and musical style. I was a member of the First Violin Section of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for 20 years. As a member and adjudicator for the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs, I send my students to participate in the OFMC Junior Festival every spring, where they receive ratings and comments from qualified adjudicators. If they receive Unanimous Superior ratings three years in a row, they are awarded a gold cup and can apply for Federation of Music Clubs scholarships.

I teach at my home in Montgomery, Ohio. In past years, I also taught at the Wyoming Fine Arts Center, Cincinnati Country Day School, Indian Hill High School and Fairfield High School.

I received my Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where I studied with Ivan Galamian, Jaime Laredo and Jascha Brodsky. I received my Master of Music degree from Indiana University at Bloomington, where I studied with Josef Gingold. I have been coached in chamber music by members of the Guarneri, Curtis and Budapest Quartets. I spent 6 summers at the Meadowmount Summer Music Camp, one summer at the Blossom Music Festival and 2 terms at the Cleveland Chamber Music Seminar.

I was a member of the First Violin section of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for 20 years. From 2003-2004, I served as Concertmaster in the Cincinnati Community Orchestra. Currently, I perform electric violin in the Queen City Klezmorim, a band specializing in Jewish klezmer music. I am also a performer and Board Member of Matinée Musicale Cincinnati and Chamber Music Network.

In addition to music, my passions are photography, web design and video production. You can learn more about my background and policies on my website at https://bassinstringstudio.com.

I played violin as a child, teenager, and young adult. Now -decades later - Im returning to the instrument as a retired person! Gayna Bassin has been so helpful in accomodating my needs as an adult student. Im relearning many things I had forgotten, but Gayna is also teaching me new techniques to improve my playing. I perform as a volunteer musician at my church, so I receive new music every week. Im grateful to have such an experienced teacher to guide me and to answer my questions about bowing, fingering, shifting, tone quality, and many other topics. We work on both ensemble and solo pieces as needed. Gayna is patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging, and her lessons are helping me feel more confident about my playing!

My 15 year old daughter came to Gayna with about two years of lessons under her belt. Gayna meets her where she is and challenges her. After every lesson my daughter comes out with a big smile on her face! In parent communications, Gayna is timely and accommodating.

My daughter has been taking lesson from Bassin for almost 2 years. She has helped her learn the basics and excel in violin. Her calm voice helps keep the lessons casual and does a great job with beginners. Our daughter went from never played to auditioning for advanced orchestra after 1 year of her guidance. Highly recommended Bassin!

She is very patient with me, and has helped me improve my violin skills over the last few years. In addition, she is very flexible with her schedule and gives me opportunities to showcase and compete with my violin skills. Her precision and dedication to teaching is something that I love- thanks Mrs. Gayna!

    Frequently asked questions

If the student is a beginner, I usually start with the method book, "Essential Elements for Strings, Violin Book 1".  Once the student starts to catch on with the basics, I add the Suzuki Violin School books for solo pieces.  For more advanced students, I will assess his/her technical level and assign an etude book and scale book to help them reach the next level. After Suzuki Book 6, I assign the standard violin literature: concertos, short pieces and sonatas, in addition to more advanced etude books. I can also help with orchestra music and sight-reading if the student is playing in an orchestra.
