About
Having taught college level singers for many years, Ms. Ziegler understands the many vocal backgrounds students can come from. She is genuine in her approach to every voice, treating each student with professionalism, and the care each voice needs. Janet specializes in classical voice, but has taught several students in Musical Theater, Jazz, and Pop, some of whom are enjoying performing careers of their own. Many of her students have gone on to pursue graduate degrees in voice, pedagogy, and performance.
I enjoy the individual tailoring of the lessons for each student. In my doctoral studies I was able to research many methods of teaching, and I use all of my knowledge to make these concepts solid for my students. Sometimes the voice, and how we make it work, can be illusive, having a teacher who can make these ideas make sense is very important.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I normally offer a 30 minute free first consultation lesson. I like to know the students short and long term goals, if there are any performances they are preparing for, is it just for fun, etc. I take a new student through a variety of vocal exercises to hear the voice, and test the range, and work through some beginner level repertoire to really get to know the voice before going further.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
DMA, Voice Performance and Pedagogy, The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, anticipated December 2017
MM, Vocal Performance, The University of Toledo, Toledo, OH, 2010
BM, Vocal Performance, The University of Toledo, Toledo, OH, 2008
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I typically ask for $45 - 60 for an hour lesson, but can negotiate. I understand that in today's economy a little wiggle room may be needed. Feel free to email me any questions, I can work inside a budget for you and your family.
How did you get started teaching?
I originally wanted to only perform, but during my Master's and Doctorate degrees I started teaching as part of my studies. I fell in love with it. Watching students learn and really understand these concepts, and achieve their goals, was addicting. All of my students are different, and being a part of their education is wonderful.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with singers as young as 10, and all the way up to 70. I work with students from a variety of backgrounds. Many of my students has been Chinese and Korean, taking voice to better command the english language, some of these students are now working on graduate degrees in voice performance. I have ballet dancers, musical theater majors, and people who want to sing better for themselves. All students are welcome!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Ask as many questions as you can! Be willing to think outside the box, and try new things. Singing can be an emotional journey, and a lot of fun.
