Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Directional drawing - in other words using known shapes to draw and put together to create more complicated shapes. Like the inside of most people’s ears has a y at the top and a c at the bottom. The outer ear has a large C with a smaller one then it’s about observation and shading. What makes this ear unique? Where does the light come from?
I also like teaching a grid with a proportional ruler. It is very good for buildings.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I took drawing lessons from Mr. Glenn. He used a method of breaking the hour into 15 sec sketches, 1 minute sketches, 5 minute sketches and 1 15 sketch focusing on all the parts of the day. He taught us to draw without looking at our paper and draw more from instinct. I still like using a lot of fundamentals and shading so I am somewhere between the two.
Acrylics I took lessons 3 years from Bert Seaburne. He is famous for his works on Indians.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $20 a week for a two hour session in art classes.
How did you get started teaching?
Pinot's Palette for painting.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of every age from 3 to I think 76. I am comfortable with lots of ages.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My favorite teaching event was when I was teaching spheres. I worked and worked on a method to get this moon to pop just right. When the students were finishing the last step I loved here their breaths of excitement as their sphere really took shape. It was like popcorn all over the room.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher that knows how to help you get connected when it comes to apply for scholarships and college.
Look for a teacher that knows how to teach the love of the subject verses the mechanics of the subject.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Where do you want to be in 5, 10 and 15 years from now? Have you developed the discipline to know how to master your fine art?
