Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to start new students by seeing where they are at technically and musically, and discovering what their goals are. Suprisingly this combination creates very specific lesson goals for each student. Technical challenges with a high level of musical ability will yeild the need to keep things interesting and fresh while sustaining good practice methods. Having very specific goals will lead to lessons that are directed toward the task, but may miss out on musicality training. It's important to me, however, that the student leave feeling stronger about where they are headed as musicians.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a masters degree in violin performance and a bachelors in viola performance. I have been performing professionally for over ten years, and teaching professionaly for just over eight years now.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Work with someone who doesn't let you get away with not practicing, or bad posture/technique/ or bad attitudes! Sometimes it's too easy to just go through the motions of a lesson. Find someone that will push you to excel!
