Tom S. says, "I’ve been a musician for most of my life, but have always struggled with my voice. Issues of range, tone and resonance were problematic for me. All of that changed when I started taking voice lessons with Brenda Kotroutsos. Brenda’s approach to my lesson plan was tailor made for me, encompassing the basics while focusing on my particular needs as a singer. This allowed me to grow and make vast improvements in many areas. Brenda has absolute confidence in her students and imparts that to them. She provides them with a basis, a platform from which to grow. She provides the tools and the incentives to make progress in many areas, and after a while, make you feel there is nothing you can’t accomplish. Her diverse background as a professional singer and performer, and her teaching experience allow her to discern a student’s needs and to apply a curriculum which enables them to reach their goals, and beyond. I’d highly recommend Brenda Kotroutsos to anyone who loves to sing, from beginner to experienced musician. There is always room to grow and Brenda will show you the way. " Read more

I combine American/European method books to customize lessons based on student goals. Not every student wants to be a virtuoso and once we explore each student's personal goals for studying piano or voice, I customize a lesson plan to achieve those goals with visible results. Your Singing Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 to $90 per hour on average. Prices vary depending on the teacher's location, experience, reputation, and whether you're taking a private or group lesson. Group lessons typically cost less per person than private lessons, but you may not get as much personal attention and feedback in a group setting.

  • Some singing teachers charge a flat rate for a specified increment of time, typically in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute increments.
  • Many coaches offer package deals to purchase 2 to 10+ lessons at a time and reduce the cost per lesson.

Do singing lessons work?

Singing lessons won't change your sound completely, but they can help improve your sound by strengthening your vocal cords and improving your range and tone.

What do singing lessons teach you?

Singing lessons involve more than just your voice. A vocal coach will teach you how to hold and improve your posture, which gives your diaphragm optimal room to expand. You also learn proper breathing techniques and how to use your breath to improve your tone. Singing lessons also help you improve your diction—the way you articulate your words when singing—as well as your ability to match specific pitches.

Can adults take singing lessons?

Yes, adults can absolutely take singing lessons. While starting singing lessons at a young age gives you more time to develop your voice, it's never too late to begin learning and improve your singing voice.

How do I find the best singing lessons near me?

Follow these guidelines to help you choose the best singing lessons near you:

  • Check out their reviews on Lessons.com and Google.
  • Get at least three estimates from teachers with similar credentials.
  • Ask for recommendations from others in the local music community.
  • Do a trial meeting or lesson if possible with several teachers to find the best fit for your goals.
  • Ask them about their training and credentials.
  • Ask about what specific methods and techniques they teach.
  • Ask about the specific progress they've made with other students.
  • Make sure their schedule matches your availability.

What questions should I ask when choosing a singing teacher?

Ask these questions to help you choose the best singing teacher for you:

  • How long have you been teaching singing?
  • Can you share any success stories?
  • Do I need to have a good voice already to become a better singer?
  • How long does it typically take to see improvement?
  • Do you offer any package deals?
  • What is your teaching schedule?
  • How long are your singing lessons?
  • How often should I practice?
  • Do you offer private or group lessons?
  • Where do you teach?
  • Do you offer online lessons using video calling?

Studying with Professor Lou Pompilio has not only taught me how to develop technical proficiency with my guitar, but also much more. He teaches utilizing Berklee principles as well as his own unique gifts that have evolved over the decades. Lou has imparted the very mindset and perspective of a musical artist. If you study with Lou, you will learn to feel the music with your ears, and think the music with your fingers. You will become a living instrument that breathes music through your guitar. You will learn how to master covers, compose originals, and create your own special brand of vocal stylings. If you study with Lou, your life will change forever, and for the better. Thank you Maestro!

I’ve been taking lessons with Anthony for about 6 months now, and my guitar playing has definitely improved. Some lessons we have deep discussions on music theory concepts, other lessons we’ve worked on songs and used them as blueprints to learn different techniques or chords or what have you. For example, recently we’ve been working on “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas, and within a month I’ve gone from never fingerpicking an acoustic to playing the song with a degree of efficiency. Genre-wise, we’ve worked on everything from Megadeth to Louis Armstrong, so he’s definitely versatile. He’s also helped me with writing my own material, and has a great recording setup. His prices are fair, and his schedule is usually pretty flexible if I can’t make a lesson one week he finds time for me. Whether you want to sight read music or play some songs around the campfire or shred like Van Halen, he’s your guy.
