About
Learn a song in your very first lesson — and enjoy the process.
I’m Dr. Xu Khuc, a classically trained pianist and teacher who believes in building confidence and connection through music. I work with families across Orange County (and online) through my studio, Inside Out Piano.
I love getting to know each student — how they think, what excites them, what holds them back — and helping them grow not just as musicians, but as people. Piano becomes a way to build focus, courage, and creativity.
If you’re looking for someone kind, patient, and deeply committed to your child’s growth, I’d be honored to be part of their journey.

My six year old daughter Claire has been playing piano for the last two years, however, since she started working with Xu I havent noticed a love for piano I never saw before. She respects Xu very much and wants to do her best and enjoys and looks forward to her lessons with her. She loves practicing songs they worked on together in her spare time. It has been a blessing to find Xu and I would recommend her without reservation.

My daughter loves piano and I am very impressed with not only what shes learned, but with Ms. Khuc as a teacher. She has always been so loving, and patient with her, modeling Christ to her through music. Im so thankful for Ms. Khuc and that she can continue to have lessons with her virtually!

Children eventually forget what they learn in the books but they will always remember how awesome a teacher was. Thank you for being just that.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I always start with a trial lesson to get to know the student—their personality, level, and goals. I want them to feel comfortable right away. From there, I tailor a plan that fits their needs, whether they’re just beginning, restarting, or aiming to perform. I teach in-person (in-home) around Orange County and also offer online lessons for flexibility.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Pedagogy, plus Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the same field from California State University, Fullerton (go, Titans!) . I’ve taught college classes, presented at national conferences, and trained under wonderful mentors throughout my life. But honestly, my biggest training has been working hands-on with students of all ages for the past 20+
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Rates start at $285/month for weekly lessons. Please reach out to discuss what might work best for your child or schedule.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching piano when I was still in high school. My teacher, My Le Nguyen, was like a second mom and showed me what it meant to really pour into students’ lives. I fell in love with teaching because it allowed me to connect deeply with students while sharing the music I love.
What types of students have you worked with?
All kinds! I’ve worked with little ones as young as 4, teens preparing for auditions, busy professionals who just want to play for joy, and students with ADHD or busy minds who thrive with creative structure. I love adapting my approach to fit each student’s unique learning style and personality.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
At our Christmas recital, I surprised each student with a personalized ornament. It was such a joyful and emotional afternoon—watching the students perform, seeing their confidence, and hearing from families how meaningful music has been in their lives. I’ll never forget it.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone you feel at ease with—someone who listens and understands what you’re looking for. The right teacher will help you grow not just musically, but also personally. Don’t settle for someone who just assigns pieces—look for someone who inspires you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about what you’d like to get out of lessons. Do you want to read music? Play by ear? Write songs? Perform? Knowing your goals (even if they’re fuzzy) helps us find the right path together. Also consider: do you want to be pushed, or do you want to go at your own pace?
