My very first student was myself!

When I was 7 I had bad luck with piano teachers. Not that I was poor student but more of that my instructors did stay in the field long enough for me to learn basics the basics. After having one of my piano teachers move away, another ran away, and one even went to rehab... I thought maybe I was bad luck, so I began to teacher myself.

With very basic knowledge in music theory it made things difficult at first but then I learned that I could learn my favorite songs just by listening to them. I would sit at the piano for what felt like hours with one ear focusing on the song and the other matching the note on the piano. In school I felt discourage about my intelligence (which later discovered was due to my reading/learning disability) so I was very insecure about my ability to be as smart as the other kids, BUT music changed that for me.

When I decided to go to College and get my degree in music I still wasn’t sure what I was going to do with music. All I knew is THIS is what I am good at and THIS is what I should be doing. I never aimed to be famous nor tried to be. I just had a passion for music and who music made me become. Music gave me strength, confidence, motivation and most of all it gave me hope. It made me feel like I could finally be proud of who I was, and I could stand amongst friends who were Professors, Doctors, or Engineers and feel confident in my own individual intelligence. No, I cannot do what an engineer can nor, will I be conducting open heart surgery but when talking with the doctor, engineer, and professor they said something that was most shocking to me. They were actual envious of me….me? One said they can barely keep a beat, the other could sing on key to save his life, and well the doctor said he does have the patients to learn an instrument (no pun intended).

So, to FINALLY answer the question, I knew right there I wanted to teach music because I never want anyone to feel the way I did. I want reach as many people like myself as I can to tell them you CAN be smart, and you CAN be something great. I have taught music and more. No matter what student crosses my path I will always encourage then to think outside the box, express their creativity, and never be fearful of those who doubt them. Each student that I have personally seen grow in confidence or skill has made my choice to become a teacher a very easy one indeed.

I can teach a wide variety of styles of music so I see students interested in musician styles from Christian to Broadway, from country to heavy metal. From gospel to jazz.
