I love teaching piano lessons and watching students grow musically. Did you know that playing an instrument makes you smarter? I have a music degree from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD. Since then I have had two careers, piano teaching and computer programming. Currently, I am back at my first love, teaching. I have over 20 years experience working with children and adults. Almost any of the traditional methods of lesson books are fine, but my favorites are Alfred Premier Piano and Faber’s Piano Adventures. I like to add a 'fun' book. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
For a new beginner, I teach them to play a song by rote using the black keys. This particular song sounds like a Native American piece. It's quite impressive since it is played with 2 hands.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's degree in music from Augustana University. At Augustana there was a well-known, wonderful piano instructor, J. Earl Lee. I studied with him for 8 years. Currently I am a member of a group of piano teachers who are learning how to be better online teachers.

How did you get started teaching?
When I was 5, I started lessons. By the time I got to Jr. High, I was studying advanced classical music. I began teaching my cousins. In college I studied piano pedagogy and taught a few students. After college I taught piano lessons at a small private school.
What types of students have you worked with?
My students have been ages 3 to 93. The 3-year-old was my daughter, who could play a little by ear. She grew up to receive 1st and 2nd places in SDMTA contests in high school. The 93-year-old is my mom! We have lessons over Zoom, and she is doing great using the Adult Piano Adventures series by Faber. Most of my students have been school-age kids, some very talented and some with learning disabilities.
