Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I offer the first lesson free to make sure the student (and parents) and me jive well together. During this lesson, I ask what musical experience the student already has. None is required! Then I ask why they are taking lessons and what they want to learn. Then we work together to achieve that goal, while also making sure they are getting the necessary tools in order to achieve their greatest goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've taken piano lessons myself since I was 6 years until I left for college. I've had lots of experience performing, and I can't wait to help you learn this skill that brings so much joy to your life and the lives of others. :)
Can be certified in Kindermusik and Music Mind Games upon request!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
First lesson is free!
30 min lesson is $18.
1 hour lesson is $30.
Additional $5 per lesson if you would like me to drive to your house. ($23/30 min, $35/1 hr.)
How did you get started teaching?
Someone asked for a teacher, I offered, and we both loved it! Some of the best things just end up happening!
What types of students have you worked with?
Children ranging from ages 7-13, both male and female.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I just love it when my students grasp and apply the concepts!I had one student who was struggling with the concept of dynamics. Finally, we looked up the definition per Wikipedia. Then I tried explaining the definition using examples from the piece he was studying. I asked him to explain it back to me in the way he understood it. After filling in holes in his understanding, he finally got it! Then he played his piece of music with the dynamics written in the music as he understood it. What a joy those moments are for both of us!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I hope you will find a teacher that resonates with you, a teacher that you will look forward to coming every week or two weeks or twice a week. I hope you will find a teacher that you enjoy, whether or not they have stickers or toys or candy after your lesson. That's why I offer your first lesson free because I want you to find the best teacher that is going to work with you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Some questions to consider might be:
What do I want to achieve? What are my long term goals?
Can my teacher help me achieve my goals?
Will I enjoy the process? Will he or she enjoy the process?
What demands does he or she make on my time?
Will it be a large financial investment to purchase books or other supplies?
Will this be a mutually beneficial relationship?
Am I willing to make sacrifices if I trust that he or she knows more than I do and is seeking my best interest?
