Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Every student is unique not only in where they are vocally, but in their learning style. Whether working with myself, or one of my staff, every student is handled according to where they are. With new clients, we have what is called an initital assesment. They come in, we meet, we have an ice breaker with them that is a little more in-depth than your typical introduction, and then we have them sing something accapella. Only then do we decide what to tackle first vocally.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Music with a concentration in voice. I also have sang on a professional level since the age of 14.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are $50/half hour with myself, or $35/half hour with one of my staff. We offer clients either 30 minute or full hour sessions.
How did you get started teaching?
I was actually in college for my Music Education degree, so I have many courses that reach beyond the scope of many vocal coaches that are college educated. My junior year of college, I began to coach privately, and loved it! I have been coaching every since.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 5, and as mature as 78. Over the years, I have worked with novice level students to professional level students. I was also featured on Bravo TV's hit show, "Thicker Than Water" in their 3rd season.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love recitals! All recitals for our Nashville students are held at the beautiful Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Nashville. I love to see students step out of their comfort zone and shine.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
In my opinion, find someone that is not just a vocal coach, but a voice teacher. Myself, and my staff are both, and this is not always the case. A voice teacher instucts in proper vocal pedagogy. A vocal coach has not had the training many times to do this, they are only able to coach in more of the performance aspect of singing.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
If you are looking for a voice teacher for a child, ALWAYS find out if they are experienced in teaching children. This takes more patience, understanding, and an overall knowledge of how to handle children and bring out the best in them. Also, the childs voice is a delicate one, and you want to choose someone that will teach your child to take care of it properly. If the lessons are for an adult, I would encourage you to just make sure it is a good match. You are entrusting this individual with one of your most precious assets, your voice! :)
