About
I teach Aikido and Aikijujutsu as well as classical weapons arts in Denton. Tomiki-ryu Aikido is well-tested and very practical for self-defense, especially when your attacker is armed or bigger or stronger than you. Grappling, striking and randori are included. You will start developing basic self-defense skills the first class.
We are also a study group for Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu, the parent art of Aikido and the source of its techniques and methods of internal power.
The Dojo of Traditional Japanese Martial Arts is dedicated to transmitting genuine classical martial arts and skills, as they were transmitted to us. In addition to aikido, our group practices Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo (staff and other weapons). The Dojo is Denton's original martial arts co-op that also offers Eishin-ryu Iaido (sword), Uechi-ryu Karate, and Tai Chi.
I love to see my students developing confidence and extraordinary abilities. It changes lives.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Each new student is given a personal introduction to the principles and practice of Aikido, Jodo or Aikijujutsu from the chief instructor for their first lesson. Afterwards they are included in partner practice and each student helps transmit what they have learned in a sempai-kohai relationship.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have practiced Aikido since 1985 and have 7th dan in the Tomiki-ryu. I also started Jodo in 1985, achieving 6th dan, and began the koryu in 1998, now holding Gomokuroku (second license) in Shindo Muso Ryu and 7th dan Kyoshi in Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iai-heiho. We also host a study group for Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu, which integrates with and improves all our other arts.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Standard dues are $85/mo for all classes (Aikido, Jodo, Aikijujutsu). Student rate is $75/mo. Partial schedule, family or hardship costs are arranged case by case.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We recently hosted Roy Goldberg, 7th dan Daito-ryu Aikijutsu, and find his seminars and teaching inspirational.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Meet the teacher, watch a class, and see if it is right for you.
