What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We will typically discuss what level they want to learn. Whether they want to be at home and just want to learn one dish or to help while they are going to culinary school. Once we figure that out together, we make a game plan to achieve that goal in a time that the student wants to learn.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I taught at multiple culinary schools in my 5 years of teaching. I have learned ways to connect to any personality. I have some of my past students doing big things in the culinary world.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
It depends on the class or the lesson, but I average $200 not including the food and equipment costs.
How did you get started teaching?
I started because my mentor was a teacher and I helped her a lot when I was younger. I found it to be a calling to help others and guide them to acheive their goals. Its a great feeling when someone that has been struggling to perfect their mothers recipe finally gets it.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with different types of students. Different backgrounds, beliefs, skill sets and disabilities. There are some that just need some basic guidance and some that need step by step instruction.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent event I have been fond of is helping one of my students open their first restaurant. Being there for them to get things rolling was an amazing experience.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise to take one course to see if there is the right chemistry. They might have all the credentials you want, but will their teaching style work for you?
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I think a good place to start is what you want at the end of the day. Do you want to learn the skills to cook at home or professionally? We are going to build off of what you want to do.
