Dan Egan has tutored our son in trumpet throughout middle school and into his current junior year of high school. Dan was able to spot both his talents and weak areas immediately and gave him the confidence and enthusiasm to build on his gifts. He gently and persistently corrects bad habits before they become bad technique. While Dan is able to bring a child who aspires to a career in music to the level where they can compete for a position or admittance to a program, he is also able to motivate the child that loves to play but wont major in music. Henry won first chair position at his high school through Dans tutelage and is learning the theory required to create harmonious spontaneous solo riffs for his Jazz band performances with the Conrad O. Johnson Jazz group. Dan has instilled a love of trumpet playing and in learning about classical and jazz music that will last throughout our sons lifetime. Dan is also a role model for the class, quality of life, friendships, travel, service to others and respect that one garners by following that passion for music into a career. We admire his talents but also his kindness. I highly endorse him as a tutor!

It has been a true pleasure to have Mr. Egan as our son’s trumpet teacher. He is super friendly, engaging, and responsive. My son always looking forward to having his trumpet lesson every week. He said not only did Mr. Egan help him with his trumpet techniques such as breathing, scales, double tongue, and vibrato, he also gave him guidance on music interpretation and music theory. Mr. Egan diligently helped my son prepare for the Houston Youth Symphony 2021-22 and Interlochen Art Camp auditions summer 2021 and 2022, both with successful results. In fact, Mr. Egan even went out of town and personally helped us test and selected a trumpet. We feel very fortunate to have Mr. Egan as my son’s music teacher.

Not only did Dan teach technique and improve the overall trumpet performance of my son, he encouraged an enthusiasm for the trumpet in him that was life changing. Dan worked with my son both virtually and in-person. He was very flexible and always found the time to get lessons in. When my son was auditioning for college, Dan was always available for consultation and direction. His attention not only to detail but to my son was very much appreciated. I highly recommend Dan Egan as a trumpet private lesson teacher.

I implore anyone looking for a trumpet teacher to consider Mr. Daniel Egan. Youll leave every lesson feeling invigorated!
Whats unique about studying with Mr. Egan? Unlike most trumpet teachers and players whove gotten complacent with their progress, he continues to hold a sense of youthfulness and seeks new ways to improve both technically and artistically. Consequently, this propels into his teaching, allowing him to use a toolbox with continuously expansive tools readily available for everyones personal needs. Furthermore, Mr. Egans ability to exemplify through the trumpet is unparalleled compared to most teachers and can help students conceptualize a beautiful vocal sound. Also, given the accolades as both a respected player and educator, Mr. Egan knows the pitfalls of trumpet playing to avoid, which has fostered success and self-satisfaction for myself and his highly esteemed Trumpet Studio.
Mr. Egan is very compassionate and has met every challenge and insecurity of mine with grace and guidance. I wouldnt be anywhere near the person or trumpet player I am today without the mentorship Ive received from Dan Egan.

Dan Egan has been amazing to work with! Dan has taught students in Dickinson ISD for the past 4 years and has been a huge part in our students success! As a professional trumpet player and band director in Dickinson myself, I want the absolute best trumpet teaching for my students and Dan is that! He has studied with the best as well as performed with many major orchestras around the world. With that kind of experience our students are truly blessed to hear such fantastic trumpet playing and pedagogy.

    Frequently asked questions

I generally will ask the student why they play the trumpet, what their goals or ambitions are (All-State, college audition, professional musician, fun/hobby.) I then ask the student to define five strengths and five work-in-progress areas of their playing. From their I'll run a few diagnostic tests to check the fundamental skill that's lacking, demonstrate and design a routine tailored to the student's level and desires.

I received my Bachelor's in Music at Indiana University and my Master's in Music from Rice University. At Rice I had a close working relationship with Barbara Butler and Charlie Geyer, two of the most renowned trumpet teachers in the world. Their method of breaking complex problems down into simpler sub-components, called "skeleton practice" is now a cornerstone of my teaching. I have expertise in many of the major trumpet methods including Stamp, Cichowicz, Schlossberg, Arban, Clarke, and many more. I've taught and given masterclasses in Dickinson, Waller, Katy, Klein, The Woodlands Christian Academy, and the British International School of Houston. From 2017-2021 I coached the Houston Youth Symphony. I have successfully prepared students for summer festival, collegiate, Region and All-State auditions. My performing credentials include Acting Principal Trumpet of the Iceland Symphony in 2021, and the same role with the Houston Grand Opera and Ballet in 2022.

Teaching was a natural outgrowth of my curiosity around a life in music. I started teaching a few students while still in high school, trying to compile my hours of practice into something digestable to elementary school student's. When I moved to Houston in 2014, I was excited about the level of enthusiasm for music in the schools. It's been a perfect match ever since.

I've taught the full gamut of players - beginning students as young as 10 years old to 60 year old "comeback" players. Each student is an entirely new experience and there is no one right way for everyone. It's this process that keeps the joy of teaching fresh and exciting.
