What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I find out what experience they have had with the violin and music in general.
I like for new students to observe some lessons of like minded students to decide whether we are a good mix.
With a student that can already play I ask them to play a few scales and pieces for me to determine what they need.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My continuing education is at workshops at Juilliard and Columbia University as well as Rice and UH.
I have been a professional violinist since 1975.

What types of students have you worked with?
Most of my students are 5-18 and I bring them to a level that some of them go on to win major contests and careers as professional musicians and on University campuses
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently (Sept. 16, 2017) my students participated in American String Teachers Association Certificate Advancement Program at University of Houston where they were evaluated by a judge. This particular program evaluates each student on their scales, arpeggios, etude, 1 or more pieces and sight reading.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Observe lessons from several teachers in the area to decide who they can learn from.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How many hours to commit to practicing each week.
