About

I am one of only a few teachers that I know of in this area who is trained in the Suzuki method of talent education. Using this method, I teach beginning students to play by listening and imitating initially, before we learn to read notes. This allows the student to concentrate on the physical aspects of playing the violin, and develops their ear for music right away, with regard to good tone, intonation, and rhythm. And....it's fun! I have many years of experience in teaching students at all levels, helping them reach their highest potential. In addition, I'm a professional player in the Dallas Opera Orchestra, among other groups, so there's not a detail of playing the violin that I haven't thought about and shared! I received my Bachelor of Music degree from the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and my Masters from the Cleveland Institute of Music. I've been teaching and making music in the Dallas area since 1992.

The thing that I enjoy the most about teaching is the students! I love getting to know what makes them tick, and planning each lesson to build on the next. With older students, I especially enjoy working on orchestral music with them for class or auditions. I also enjoy preparing all students for our twice a year recitals, which is their chance to shine for family and friends.

She is very knowledgable and extremely patient with and understanding of her students and their different learning styles. I am very thankful that we were able to have her as a teacher over the years.

Mrs. Shields is a patient and encouraging teacher, who enjoys seeing her students grow as musicians. She does a great job explaining new skills and concepts. It is obvious that Mrs. Shields loves playing the violin and teaching her students to play the violin.
