Rochelle F. says, "Dear Sir or Madam, I have known Laneigha Shuman for seventeen years, seven of which I studied piano and music theory under her direction and teaching. As a teacher, Laneigha excelled at teaching children. Though she also taught adults, her passion was with the children she taught. Her ability to connect with children and make the learning experience fun is superior. As her student, I remember her being very patient and kind when I did not understand theory or play to the best of my ability. She was always positive and encouraging. I cannot remember a negative word during her lessons and I always left feeling good and accomplished. As a child with learning disabilities, that meant the world to me. She always took great care in giving her students individualized lessons plans based on their abilities. As a slower learning student she was able to recognize my strengths and weaknesses and cater to those needs and help me focus. She also taught very young children all the way up to adult-aged students, all with their own learning curves and personalized lessons. Throughout my piano lessons with Laneigha I was awarded multiple trophies, medals, and ribbons in State competitions. Because of her teachings, positivity, and encouragement I went on to excel in music and became a Drum Major of Duncan High School band in 2004 and 2005. I also credit Laneigha for my success as a professional adult. Because of her extraordinary teaching technique, positivity and encouragement I continued my education and despite any learning deficits, I graduated Nursing school and have become a successful nurse. I believe her skills, experience, and passion for teaching children make her an excellent candidate for a music teacher at your school and believe your students will excel under her direction and teaching. I recommend Laneigha to you without reservation. If you have any further questions with regard to her background or qualifications, please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind Regards, Rochelle Facundo [email protected]" Read more

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Tiffany R.
I grew up taking piano lessons with Mrs. Shuman (I want to say for about 12 years?), and I loved them! She taught me the basics, and then we branched out to learn a wide variety of music styles. Her lessons are half on the piano, and half learning musical theory. This served me well as I joined choir in junior high, and played french horn in band. I was eventually the drum major for my high school band, and I'm positive it was the instruction I received from Mrs. Shuman that made it possible for me to succeed as a musician. She took us to piano contests each year and through her instruction I received Superior ratings in piano and theory every year from junior high through high school. I even received a music scholarship of $5,000 per year for college. I joined her piano ensembles on occasion, and we played duets, trios, and quartets. What a great learning experience. I have two favorite things I would like to mention about taking lessons. First, Mrs. Shuman hosts the best piano recitals! She let us choose from her expansive piano library to find songs that suited our level and style, and the recitals were often themed which made them a lot of fun as a kid. Second, she would take us to a local restaurant and let us play piano for tips! I used to love playing, and earned quite a bit of money as well. It was highly motivating to learn a wide variety of songs so that I could play for a longer amount of time. Your kids would be lucky to have a wonderful teacher in Mrs. Shuman. I highly recommend her!
