Kerri is a fantastic teacher for both voice and piano. She is enthusiastic and relates well to kids of all ages (Ive had kids from 8yo or so through late teens take from her). She knows what she is doing and is an excellent teacher.

Our daughter had piano lessons with Kerri and loved it. We feel like she gained a new confidence with her. I liked that at the holidays she had the kids do a concert at a senior center. That is such a valuable skill, being comfortable playing in front of an audience.

    Frequently asked questions

I like to meet the student before starting lessons to have a relaxed time of 'getting to know' each other at no cost.  I like to know what styles of music the student likes and what their interests and/or goals are for learning their instument.  I ask them what their experience has been with taking music lessons and what they liked and or didn't like about those lessons.  I am interested in what other activities they like to do with their day and find their best ways they like to learn.  I like them to know what a typical music lesson looks by showing them how I teach and what areas I focus the music lesson on.

I have a Masters degree in Education and 2 Bachelors degree in Music/Voice, Psychology and Early Childhood Education.  Though I teach all genres of music, I was trained classically by my mentor, Dr. Linda Banister at Georgia Regents University.  I won 2nd place in the NAT's Singing Competition. Kerri loves sharing with others her respect and enjoyment of music. Kerri has sung with a colligate choir, chamber ensemble, church choir and worship teams. She has been a member of the Kapiolani Singers in Hawaii, the Sweet Adelines in North Carolina and sang solo in a restaurant in South Korea.

Kerri teaches voice and beginning and intermediate piano. Her enthusiasm, encouragement and attention to detail help students excel quickly and have fun in the process. Kerri customizes her lessons to each student, taking time to explore the music that they love.

My Grandmother was a classical singer who taught me to sing with her and my mother was a pianist who taught me to appreciate the piano and so I sang and played piano growing up. I LOVE ALL genres of MUSIC!  When I was a bilingual teacher I noticed the students learned faster when I applied voice and/piano when teaching educational concepts in the classroom so when I had 4 sons I taught them all piano.  From there launched teaching piano lessons and when I completed my degree in Voice I broadened my skills to include Professional Piano and Voice.

Due to my broad background in teaching youth, I specialize in that age range knowing how to keep their attention, keep the lesson relevant and fun.  We do much laughing in our lessons while ensuring the student is still learning. I also work well with adolescents who have 'shyness' and still love music but lack the confidence to share their love for playing.  I use many creative methods to draw gently the student to grow in their self image and gain the positive qualities of playing their instrument to break out of their shyness and share their talents with others.  I also love working with teens, adults and recently I taught voice and piano to a Grandpa of 74 years old who wanted to learn to play and sing Christmas songs with his Grandkids.  He was a major HIT with the family and they had a blast enjoying singing Jingle Bells all together around their Christmas Family Gathering.

I have so many special events with my students that I could go on and on about!  I tell a lot of those on my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/5To1MusicStudio/ and include many short video clips of my students success.  I love ALL my students young and old!  I'm so grateful to combine my skills of teaching music with their interest to learn and 'magic' happens where everybody wins!

Meet with the teacher before signing up and be sure your comfortable with the person and agree with their philosophy in how to teach that particular instrument.  Ask them to show you an example of how they teach.  Ask yourself after you leave, "Did the teacher seem interested in me and what music I want to play?" and "Did the teacher seem passionate about teaching that instrument and encouraging to me?"

Why do they want to take music lessons?  What do they hope to get out of it?  What artists who play their instruments do they listen to and like?  Do they want to learn to perform their instrument for others?
