Douglas Benson Ferry of Corinne, Utah, began his violin studies at the early age of three-years-old with the renowned pedagogue, Deborah Moench. From ages fourteen to eighteen, he studied with Ralph Matson, former Concertmaster of the Utah Symphony. He recently graduated from Brigham Young Universtiy (BYU) with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Minor in Business. As a BYU violinist, he studied under the instruction of Associate Professor, Monte Belknap. He has been a member of the BYU Philharmonic where he has served as principle second violinist and a member of the first violin section. He is a certified violin instructor through the Suzuki Association of Utah and has over ten years of teaching experience. Douglas is an award-winning violinist on the international and state levels.

Prior to his collegiate music career, Douglas’ chamber group, the “Jade Quartet” was awarded first place at the 2011 University of Utah Chamber Music Competition. In 2011, he also won the “Best Bach” award at the American String Teachers Association Festival hosted at Weber State. From 2011-2012, Douglas served as the Concertmaster of the Utah Youth Symphony conducted by Barbara Scowcroft, a group in which he played for two years. As a junior in high school, he was featured on the Utah Symphony’s annual “Salute to Youth” concert with three additional performances in Abravanel Hall with the Utah Symphony for over 7,500 Wasatch Front 5th graders as part of an educational outreach program.

Furthermore, in 2009, Douglas performed on a live performance on Christopher O’Riley’s National Public Radio program, “From the Top” as Concertmaster of the Gifted Music School Orchestra under conductor Eugene Watnabe. Douglas has been a three-time winner of the State Fair Classical Music Competition, a five-time finalist of the Utah Symphony’s “Salute to Youth” competition, and a three-time member of the UMEA All-State Orchestra. He received superior ratings at the High School State Solo and Ensemble Festival on violin for four consecutive years. Finally, he is a Gold Cup recipient from the National Federation of Music Clubs Festival with eleven superior ratings on violin and eight on piano.

In addition to his love for performing and teaching the violin, Douglas possesses a unique interest in academics and animals; he was a student in the BYU Honors Program and recently accepted admission into the Texas A&M Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. He also likes to run, serve others, and spend time with his family members and friends. As a private violin instructor, Douglas finds fulfillment in helping others achieve musical excellence. He understands that each student is unique and requires specific, personalized instruction to help them become their very best. One student at a time, it is his joy to bless the world with the gift of music.

Doug is an extremely dedicated teacher who cares about his students. Hes not just ticking a box, he is personally invested in what he does. He has incredible attention to detail and patience. He is always encouraging and positive. Also, he has demonstrated valuable flexibility in scheduling, juggling his own heavy load to fit with my daughters mercurial schedule.
