About

Hello!

I'm glad you are considering taking flute or piano lessons with me!

My music study includes a BM in Music Composition, with minors in flute and piano, as well as a MM in flute performance. Special studies include Ransom Wilson (flute) and Michael Czajkowski (Julliard).

I have been teaching for the better part of 40 years, in private settings as well as private high school. Most recently I have worked as an accompanist and assistant conductor for the Columbia Choirs of Metropolitan Seattle, and the Indianapolis Children's Choirs. I am also a published composer.

I teach classical flute and piano, using primarily materials from the Royal Conservatory of Music. I like their attention to all aspects of music study, including theory, history, technique and repertoire.

I would love to work with you, and look forward to hearing from you!

    Frequently asked questions

A first lesson is the best place to start, where I can either ask the new student to play for me, or, if the student does not know how to play, we just start with right in with basic hand position and learning to read notes on the staff. Every student is different, so getting to know each other is an integral part of the starting process as well. I will help the student to understand my expectations in order to advance in their study. And I seek to create a comfortable environment so that we can talk freely about difficulties that the student may encounter in their study.

I received my BM in Music Theory in 1977, and my MM in Flute Performance in 1980.  My teachers have included Ransom Wilson (French techniques) and Betty Bang Mather (early flute and Baroque techniques.)  In addition, I have participated in master classes with such eminent flautists as the late Jean-Pierre Rampal.   Not limited just to classical, I have also played and toured with a jazz/rock band.  I have been teaching for over 40 years at all levels and ages, including teaching at the University of Kansas.  My students have participated in student orchestras and successfully participated in solo and ensemble events with highest ratings.  I currently free-lance on flute. I have  played for numerous recordings in both classical and pop style. From 2003-2021, I was the assistant conductor and accompanist for the Columbia Choirs of Metropolitan Seattle.

I give discounts for lessons paid in advance on a schedule that I have.

When I was in high school, the local music store gave away five free lessons with each new instrument purchased. And they needed somebody to fulfill these free lessons. And that is when I started!

I have worked with very young up to seniors.

    Experience matters!

How much practice should I expect? Am I willing to put in that much time? Am I willing to learn scales and other techniques necessary to creating beautiful music? How can I get my practice in when I have a lot of school activities? What about if I need to miss a lesson?
