About

I teach violin students of all ages from no experience to beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. I strive for greater playing ability in a nurturing environment while always making a beautiful sound. I start with the Suzuki method.

My music education focuses the student through immersion, encouragement, small steps, and an unforced timetable for learning material based on each student's development and ability to imitate examples and internalize principles. Regular consistent practice is required and parent involvement is encouraged for younger students. Reviewing material, position, intonation, and bow techniques to always make a beautiful sound is of primary importance.

Lessons with Jared were exactly what I needed. Im in my early 30s, and when I first sought violin lessons early in the pandemic, it had been a dozen years since I had played regularly in an orchestra and a couple more since I had regularly taken lessons. I thought that, with more discipline and maturity and some personal experience as a teacher, I was ready for an exacting, perfectionist approach and methodical repetition of scales and etudes, and a big emphasis on musical theory. I was surprised when we started simple and moved quickly through a variety of pieces. I had been used to spending months on certain pieces, but Jared wasnt nitpicking, and we played together a lot. But what I soon realized is that this is really what I needed. I found my love for my instrument was soon restored, and that I was choosing to practice as an outlet during the pandemic. I was practicing more than ever, and enjoying it. And as we moved onto new pieces, Jared gradually introduced more difficult music with new technical challenges, including scales and etudes. He mixed in folk and popular music as well, and was open to my suggestions of pieces to play. I can see and hear that my range and skills have grown noticeably: I am now more comfortable in second position, Im playing in more challenging keys, my ear has improved. Importantly, Im playing my violin better than I ever was, and ready to invest in upgrades to my instrument.
Jared is a patient teacher and a kind person, and is accommodating with scheduling for his adult students as well as with online and safe, socially distanced lessons. I also observed a little of him working with kids, and it is clear that hes great with young students. If youre an adult and are looking to revive your love for your instrument and make real strides, I highly recommend Jared for your violin lessons.

I loved taking violin lessons from Jared at Macfarlane Violin Studio. He challenged my skill in both music and performance, was patient with my progress, encouraging yet strict with techniques, and passionate about the art of violin. After just a few lessons I already saw progress in my skill. I highly recommend him as a violin teacher to anyone looking to learn or improve their skill in playing violin.
