About
I love to help students at all levels and ages to develop their own relationship with the piano, and have fun in the process. After all, we all learn best when we are smiling!
I have taught hundreds of students for over 30 years and have a double degree in music from the Universith of Washington.
I have a comprehensive and multifaceted approach that includes playing pieces they love, theory, technique, music history, improvisation and compositiion. I design lessons to fit each students learning styles and goals.
Mine is not a cookie-cutter approach. Each student is unique, so each student's lessons are unique.
I enjoy all aspects of my work: teaching students of varying ages and abilities, continuing to study and grow as a teacher, and most of all, seeing the delight in my students eyes when they are excited about the piece they are learning, have a breakthrough in understanding or feel pride in their accomplishment.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I always begin with a free trial lesson so you can see if I am the right teacher for you or your child. I have prepared for that lesson in advance so that you get the most out of it and I can evaluate the your level, which includes any gaps you might have in your previous training.
I encourage you or your child to let me know what music you would like to play. I offer choices so that you are playing music you enjoy!
I design an approach that will best help you grow at your optimal pace. That approach is always in process, as your learning evolves. I welcome your input!
I want every student to run to the piano because they are excited about what they are learning.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have two degrees in music from the University of Washington. I majored in piano performance and music history with special emphasis on pedagogy and advanced theory. I endeavor to continue growing as a teacher and musician through workshops, classes and independent study. For example, I began studying vocal jazz ten years ago and have performed in a non-professional capacity in several venues, including Tula's in Seattle. Taking lessons and performing on a second instrument has not only improved my overall musicianship, it has also reminded me of the challenges of being a beginner. My grandparents were professional musicians and their joy with music and teaching influenced me to want to follow in their footsteps. I hope to pass their love of music on to my students.
