About

Singing

Students are invited into joyful learning in which they will grow in knowledge, skill, and confidence for lifelong music making! Through exercises and repertoire, older students will focus on breathing, posture, technique, range development, projection, confidence, expression, pitch/ear training, and stage presence. Through singing games and other energetic activities, younger students will focus on basic musical skills such as beat keeping, in tune singing, instrument exploration, and expression in movement in lessons that are singing based and play focused. Music theory is woven throughout all lessons, and all students will have performance opportunities.

Ukulele

Students will be amazed at how quickly they learn ukulele. They will even be able to play a couple songs after their first lesson. Beginning and intermediate ukulele students will learn chords and chord families, proper finger placement, strumming and picking patterns, melodies and lead lines, and music theory. Students will be encouraged to sing while they play and to play with other instrumentalists or recordings. Younger players will develop musical skills through movement, games, and playful activities in addition to playing ukulele. Music theory is woven throughout all lessons, and all students will have performance opportunities.

My students are so capable, and it's compelling to help them discover their talent and encourage them along the way. It's a delight to bring joy to others by helping them sing and play ukulele.

    Frequently asked questions

Many students sign up for a single lesson to see if we are a good fit for each other. In that lesson, we dive right into music making, and I assess where a student is so that I can create lessons tailored to their abilities and interest.

    Singing

My interest in music began at a very young age when I began singing in school and church choirs. Throughout middle school and high school, I focused on vocal performance and received affirmation through various honors (district solo festival winner, all-state participant, jazz competition solo achievement awards, OMTA recital awards). I continued to study music through college and completed a total of seven years of private voice lessons. Since then, I’ve directed children’s choirs and an adult choir. I was a member and soloist for New Classic Singers, a professional classical choir in Chicago. And I have taught private voice lessons for 13 years. For six years, I taught preschool-6th grade general music and choir at Bellevue Christian School. I am Kodály certified and have continued graduate studies at Seattle Pacific University.

    Ukulele

Seven years ago, I picked up a ukulele and fell in love! After years of studying voice, earning a music degree, teaching private singing lessons, teaching elementary general music, and directing choirs, I found a new creative outlet. The ukulele! It is a fabulous instrument for learning about music and building strong musical skills. I have taught after school classes for large groups as well as private lessons, and I have 6 years of experience performing on ukulele, leading school-wide singing at weekly assemblies and occasionally playing in my church’s contemporary band.

A 30 minute lesson costs $43. Group lessons are available for first grade through middle school, and the cost of group lessons is $27 per class.

I accept students age 6 and up, and I work with students of all abilities. I often help high school singers prepare for district solo ensemble, college auditions, community theater auditions, etc. My younger students benefit from strong music training (including music theory, ear training, notation, singing in tune), which has a lasting impact on their development.
