Sensei Greg Sommers-Herivel has taught our son since 2015. His patience and outstanding ways of teaching have been key to keep our son attending and growing at NW School of Karate. The new location is great!!

Sensei Greg is a knowledgeable teacher who gives fantastic examples. He works really well with any age group. I had 2 - 9 year olds in the program and he constantly found ways to engage them and make them interested in learning more. The students advance without feeling like they're on a conveyor belt. Progress is made through earning the knowledge not just putting in time as opposed to other dojos I've seen. Fantastic dojo!!!

My kids have been a student of sensei Greg for over four years and have developed a great deal of sel-control, patience, self-discipline and self-defense just to name a few life skills. Greg shows patients, consistency, and firm instruction while developing a unique relationship with his students. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic Greg and NW School of Karate have been a lifeline for our kids and family by fighting hard to remain open whether in person or online. We plan to keep our kids involved with his classes as long as possible. Thanks Greg!

How did you get started teaching?

Sensei Greg Sommers-Herivel began his study at the Washington Karate Association before joining the Northwest School of Karate in 2003. He has over 15 years of experience in Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu.

What types of students have you worked with?

Ages 5 and up - adults and teens are welcome.  You are not too old to start!

We teach teach anyone impacted by body dysmorphia, domestic violence, or sexual assault of all forms (including stalking) for free.  You do not have to tell your story.  You are in control of that.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Belt tests showcase each student's progress.  It is always a pleasure to watch a student learn and grow and to formally recognize that with a new belt.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Look for a school that emphasizes lifelong learning and personal growth.  Some schools are counting on parents being fixated on the belts and they will charge accordingly.  At our school the belts will come with dilligent practice, buckets of sweat, and, most importantly, time.  Learn, grow, and enjoy the journey.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Everyone is different.  Do you have a previous injury that needs to be accommodated?  How about a fitness goal?  What questions do you have about studying a martial art?
