About
Qiuchen is an enthusiastic percussionist and music educator who holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Xing Hai Conservatory of Music in China, an Advanced Certificate in Performance from the University of Toronto, a Master’s Degree in percussion performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and a Graduate Diploma in Performance from McGill University. She was awarded scholarships from the latter two universities.
Over the years, Qiuchen has participated in many well-known workshops and festival performances including Leigh Howard Stevens’ 37th Annual Summer Marimba Seminar, the 2016 Percussive Arts Society’s International Convention (on the Cloyd Duff Scholarship), the 2017 Nief-Norf Summer Festival, and the 2018 Atlantic Music Festival (on fellowship). She also worked as a full-time percussionist for the Beijing Performance Production Center of Guangdong Province TV Station. Besides her devotion to performance, Qiuchen has a Teacher’s Certification in Music Education and over 10 years of experience as a music instructor, partially at the Canada Music Academy.
Passionate about teaching music through percussion, Qiuchen has developed a variety of methods to educate her students. She is experienced with students of varied ages, experience levels, and learning differences. Qiuchen tailors lesson plans to suit each individual student and guides them through every step of the musical journey. Qiuchen is devoted to helping her students attain their musical goals while simultaneously developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for all kinds of music.
Qiuchen has studied Classical, Rock, Jazz, Contemporary, Steel Pan, Tabla, Latin-American, and African drumming. She can teach marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, & timpani (beginner to advanced), snare drum & drum-set (beginner to intermediate), piano (beginner to intermediate), and music theory & ear training (beginner to advanced). She can even offer lessons in Mandarin!
