When Karlyn Brett brought the Suzuki Piano Method to Spokane, I was lucky enough to be one of her students. I started teaching soon afterwards and taught for 13 years. I am now teaching again and studying again under this great teacher trainer.
What I love about teaching is seeing the lights come on and a love of music born in children (and adults!). Music is the difference between existing and living - and I love seeing how music creates beautiful people as well as beautiful musicians.
I enjoy watching the light bulb turn on and seeing children (and adults) be excited about playing the piano and learning music. Teaching one-on-one is my favorite way because you can give each student the attention they need to succeed.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Since I teach Suzuki Method of piano, I work with the parents first to make sure they understand how Suzuki works and what is expected of them. Parents are more involved so they need to understand and be onboard. I teach hand position and freedom of movement very carefully at the beginning so that when they play harder pieces down the road, their technique is already in place. The 3 year olds play a lot of good music games while they learn to use their fingers. All students learn the first book by ear and then learn to read music. This trains the ear to listen for the tone we want.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My education and training includes:
Two years of music training at Spokane Falls Community College,
Private piano study under Mrs. Karlyn Brett, the woman who brought Suzuki Piano to Spokane,
A private lesson with Dr. Haruko Kataoka, the co-developer (with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki) of the Suzuki Piano Method,
and currently taking a course to receive official certification from the Suzuki Association of the Americas to teach Suzuki Book 1.
