Artisan Martial Arts
About
I believe everyone has the right to be and feel safe. I have been training in the martial arts for over 30 years and teaching for about 20. Most of my training has focused on Kempo Karate, pressure point self-defense, and Filipino knife. I spent 20 years in the security industry working as a bouncer, patrol officer, hospital security, and as a safety skills and tool educator.
In 2021 I moved from teaching out of my garage to a storefront martial arts school located in East Vancouver on Mill Plain and 136th.

Frequently asked questions
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been training in the martial arts since 1990. My primary focus has been Kempo Karate with pressure point applications. I currently hold a 6th Degree Black Belt in Ryukyu Kempo. In 2000 I added Filipino Martial Arts to my studies. I hold a Black Belt in Combat Arnis. I am a Senior Instructor in Bram Frank's Modular Knife system.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $125 per month based on a subscription model for Kempo Karate classes which are held twice a week.
Modular Knife starts with a $200, 6 week (12 class) beginner course, and moves into a once per week standard class at $75 per month. Also based on a subscription model.
Subscription model = Most everything is included, No upselling, you cancel any time.
Private classes are $75 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I initally wanted a training partner. However, teaching a skill can improve your own skill.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with most all types of students and of all ages. I typically perfer to take students 9 years and older. I once had a 70 year old, retired Judge from Eugene, drive to my dojo in Vancouver a couple times per month to train. I have also had a couple students who would be considered on the spectrum (Autistic/Aspergers).
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Not every martial art is a good fit for everyone. Find a martial art that speaks to you and find someone who teaches it that you get along with. You don't have to be BFFs with the instructor, but if there is something you can't stand about the instructor, no matter how good the information is, you won't hear it.
