Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I'll see what they know first and then figure out where to go next to improve their skills.
For brand-new beginners, I'll teach them theory lessons and scales.
For students with a basic foundation, I'll build off of what they already know and teach them chords and work on agility and dynamics.
For intermediate students, we'll work on chord progressions, arpeggios, and more advanced scales.
For anyone with more experience than that, I'll leave it more open and let them choose what they learn.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have taken 11 years of piano lessons, along with two band classes, a year of choir, and I taught myself guitar. I've been making music since I was 5 and I play piano and guitar every day.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$20 for a half hour and $35 for a full hour.
How did you get started teaching?
This is my first professional teaching experience!
What types of students have you worked with?
I'm just starting to teach.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I played jazz piano in an ensemble, bongos in a percussion ensemble, a piano solo, and a vocal solo at a two day music competition.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you know what you want to learn about and what kinds of music you want to play. Otherwise your teacher won't know how to help you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do they want to learn? What style of music do they want to play? How much time and effort are they willing to put in?
