About

I'm excited to pass on the all the skills I have learned to my students. Music is a universal world wide language that is written the same way in every country of the world. However every country has their unique styles, and rhythms. This is where the challenges start after one has a solid skill set in our countries standard styles. You can, and will feel like a novice if you begin to study the world's many other styles. I am able to teach acoustic guitar for beginners to intermediate skill sets. Main styles are folk, rock, country, pop, blues, jam, and bluegrass. If you are interested in playing guitar, and want to learn songs, or some lead guitar in any of these wonderful and fun American styles, I would love to share my knowledge of this awesome instrument with you.

I've been playing drums since childhood. I played in the middle school and high school concert band, was first chair snare drummer in the marching band, as well as the high school jazz band. My junior and senior years of high school some friends and I formed a rock/jam band that played mainly cover songs and a few of our own songs.

After a couple years in college I returned to my home town of Sauk center Mn. And began playing with some friends there where I was the drummer for three different bands at different times and performed in bars earning money playing both original songs and cover songs. At this point I really stepped up my skills in both drums, and vocals as one of my bass guitar players was also a high school choir director. She helped me to learn how to sing. We played two shows a weekend and made a name in our area for ourselves.

Years later I relocated again to Alaska and started playing guitar and mandolin with my friend and glass blowing mentor Jeff Jensen. This time was key in my guitar and mandolin playing skills, as there was only the two of us so being solid and tight sounding was really key. Then about a year later I helped to form the Mike Olson Band and played drums and some mandolin for them. This gig payed my rent for two years straight but really wasn't my style as I longed to play jam and rock band music so again I put together a group of players and formed the band "here to play" we played from cantwell ak to homer for several years again paying the rent on music alone. Eventually we parted ways as some of the players moved to the lower 48. So I descided two study guitar at this point and got serious about it. Now leveled up at guitar playing I am looking forward to passing on the fun of playing guitar to some others. I am more than willing to teach drums as well please let me know what you want to learn and what level you are at so I can see if I can help you get to where you want to be.

seeing my students progress and get confidence as they advance on their instrument makes my day. I remember the struggle and the feelings as I progressed through the lessons and realize I was really becoming the musician I had wanted to be. Without lessons it is really easy to get stuck and just think you're never going to get anywhere. That kind of thing make people give up for long periods of time, and sometimes forever. It'll take all the fun out of playing an instrument. I don't want to see students go through this struggle. I will make sure that they don't.

    Frequently asked questions

First I ask what the student would like to learn. Then I find out what the student knows already. Then we move forward from there.  Though many people have some experience playing already often they have not learned important basics such as hand positioning, counting time signatures, and picking styles. These basics will help you build skills faster and the right way. Doing these basics incorrectly will hinder your playing and make it difficult to keep moving forward at a good momentum.

School trained drummer/percussionist making me a master note counter and time keeper. Many years of playing as a professional musician in bars and stages suck as the state fair, trapper creek festivals, and alyeska  resort. I have have worked with guitar teachers as well.
