Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First we will talk about the maintenance and general caretaking and practice routines that a majority of musicians consider commonplace or essential. These are what I refer to as "the basics of basics"... such as proper care and handling of the instrument, definitions of parts and their functions, hardware identification and formulating a realistic and practical workout routine.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
20+ years of guitar playing experience. 5+ years of Music Theory education with a private instructor.
Hands on experience with various hardware, pedals, effects, and recording.
Multiple years of worship leader experience in a church setting. 15+ years of mixing, mastering, and production experience on multiple DAW's.
Extensive musical knowledge including: music history, genre origins, music theory essentials, and much more.
I have also developed various techniques and tips to help convey music theory principles in a practical and understandable manner for beginner's and advanced guitarists alike.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Varies on what all we will be covering. Basic Guitar Tutorials average $40-$80 per hour + expenses such has travel (Gas, etc.) HOWEVER... I DO consider income and current status when formulating a price plan for individuals. I will not turn someone down because they can not afford lessons...
How did you get started teaching?
Trying to find people to play with!
What types of students have you worked with?
Young children from 4-12 years old. Beginner & Intermediate worship leaders and other performers. Older individuals who want to learn as a hobby later in life.w
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Due to recent COVID restrictions, it has been a while since I have seen a live event, however i enjoy improvisational music such as Widespread Panic, Umphrey's McGee, Phish, and Dead & Co. to name a few.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone you vibe with. Find someone who seems to speak a language in which you understand and make sure you can get along with the teacher. Make sure the instructor plans on teaching you techniques and scales, etc and not only "songs you like"! That's a small part of beginning guitar, but definitely not the main part! Make sure theyre not stretching as little information in to as much time as they can!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Have I thoroughly understood, contemplated and attempted to apply the principles the instructor taught me?
