Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, we determine goals and skill level. Then we utilize our lesson time to methodically help you reach those goals e.g. using scales, lesson books, songs and understanding of music. For some this means starting from scratch and learning to read music and rhythms and for others it means fine tuning already performing musicians.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We have many teachers here at GuitarTommy’s. Each teacher is a performing musician and have degrees ranging from Master’s degree to Associates degree. Playing experience from our teachers ranges from 37 years to about 10.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Most students get a 30-minute lesson once a week. Some truly ambitious take more time per week with their instructor. Lessons are billed @ $25 per session once a month with no obligation to continue. Last lesson of every month you pay for following month to secure your time and teacher.
How did you get started teaching?
Since we have many teachers the story here would vary. But, personally I have played music for many years and loved sharing the joy that brings me. I used to teach music in the school system but eventually my after-school teaching overtook my daily routine. It is awesome to see students grow and enjoy getting better.
What types of students have you worked with?
We have students from 3 to 75 and all different back grounds and ability. We have experience working with autism and special needs and we have patience, probably the most important skill. Each student’s goals are different just as we are. It’s our job to help get you to those goals.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One of our students wrote a school paper about our store and his neighborhood. It was heartwarming to read that his weekly visit to our store is a highlight and one of his very favorite places.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Just as each student is different, so is each teacher. We are embarking on a journey together… let’s make it a fun experience… as it should be. Come in and try one of our teachers.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Things to consider are most definitely your goals… what are you trying to achieve? Also, do I have the right gear to make this journey a fun productive one. Some instruments are needed to be sized for example, a too big guitar is nearly unplayable or a too small violin etc. Most students do best using a lesson book with a guided path for the student and the teacher to give a firm foundation for learning.
