Violin Lessons For Beginners

My name is Grace Pittman and I am a senior at Perry High School. I have been playing the violin for about seven years and have taken private lessons and orchestra at school. In addition, I have taken other music courses such as AP Music Theory, piano and guitar. I have several years of experience in orchestra in both second and first violin (different violin positions in the orchestra) and therefore can aid beginning violinists through their music in orchestra as well as help them strengthen other techniques in different repertoire. Although I am new at teaching violin for beginners, I have researched and received training from my current violin teacher.
I am very passionate about music and teaching. Although I love the specific intricacies of music such as the notes and chords on the page, being able to teach kids to love music is something I love even more. I want to teach students to make the notes on the page into a story that they can relate to. Music is such a good outlet to have and I am grateful to be given the knowledge and passion to share that experience with other kids. In addition, I love seeing kids improve in not only their ability to play the violin but also their love for the instrument and music itself.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically when working with a new student, I have them perform their most recent song they learned in order to gauge their understanding. However, if the student is brand new to violin, I would discuss the goals for the students with the violin and the means of either renting or purchasing a violin. Lastly, I would outline my lesson plans for the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing violin for about seven years and have participated in orchestra and in private lessons. In orchestra, I have been first chair and therefore assist the other students in my section. In addition, I also play the piano and have taken AP Music Theory in which I scored a 5 on the AP test in May 2020.
How did you get started teaching?
I am a new teacher, but I have always wanted to teach music. I received most of my inspiration from my music teachers. For example, I was volunteering in my elementary school choir production and admired the choir teachers dedication to her students. In addition, all of my orchestra have played a significant role in my love for music and I hope to do the same for other students.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have not worked with any students before. However, I have helped several of my peers in orchestra.
