I enjoy working with singers of all ages and ability levels. I've worked with dozens of "tone deaf" students to help them develop their ability to sing, and frequently train teachers in working with singers who struggle. On the other hand, I have many professional students who are professional singers and performers and work on highly advanced technique.
I always focus on enjoyment in the lesson, as the best learning happens when we're having fun. I also work hard to build confidence and stage presence. Finally, a main priority is instilling proper vocal health to avoid voice damage.
I also offer Acting Coaching. My students focus on developing stage presence, learning short monologues and scenes, building audition skills, and developing their vocal/facial/physical expression.
In addition, I've been a math tutor for the last decade for students of all ages. I specialize in standardized test prep, particularly SAT/ACT. I have near perfect scores on both tests and I'm a member of MENSA and the Triple 9 Society.
Singing is one of the most vulnerable things a human can do. Learning to sing confidently makes someone feel much better about themselves and can dramatically improve self-esteem. I love seeing the smile on a singer's face when something 'clicks' and they hear their voice in a new way.
When my Acting students connect deeply with a character/role and feel themselves reaching a new level of skill through our work together it's very rewarding. Many of my students have landed their first lead roles after our work together, and seeing a student I've coached go on to a starring role on stage is always a thrilling experience.
In my math tutoring/standardized test prep work the most enjoyable aspect is helping students learn to understand math more deeply and enjoy it. Math anxiety is real and many people feel a lot of negative emotion around math. Helping students overcome the stress associated with math and make it more enjoyable while improving their skills and test scores is great feeling.
All the work I do is done through the lens of a lifecoach/mentor. I focus on habit formation, overcoming anxiety, and developing self-confidence in every subject I teach. My students come out of a coaching session feeling more in control and less stressed about the challenge of our work together.

Topher has a balance of friendliness and professionalism. He knows how to make you laugh and smile while also being straightforward when it comes to your singing and advice. I never had a session without laughing and learning something new. It’s been 4 sessions consecutively so far, and I plan to keep on working with Topher until I achieve my goals. Thanks for making me a better singer, Topher!
Topher is an energetic and enthusiastic instructor. He is very knowledgeable about the voice, how it works and how to improve its capabilities. I really enjoy working with him.
I had an initial singing lesson with Topher. I found his teaching style relaxed and very informative. He has the experience I need to get me to the next level in my singing. I anticipate a great learning experience with Topher.
Clear direction, great examples and analogies, very helpful feedback.
I generally treat the first lesson as a chance to get to know each other, set vocal goals, and see if it would be a good fit to work together. From amateurs who want help to "find their voice" to skilled singers preparing for auditions, performances, and shows, I love helping singers develop their instrument and improve their singing.
I am a quarterfinalist for the 2020 Grammy Award for Music Educator of the Year.
My Bachelor's is in Vocal Music Education from the University of Maine. I Also studied the Kodaly Philosophy of Music Education in my Graduate work at the New England Conservatory in Boston.
I have over a decade of experience teaching private lessons, school choirs, church choirs, musical theatre productions, and a variety of community choirs, in addition to professional work as a singer including solos with the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Tanglewood Festival Chorus
I discuss pricing after the first lesson.
I reserve scholarship/fianncial-aid funding for singers who can't afford to pay the full rate.
I began teaching lessons to my friends in high school, after studying extensively in college I went on to teach in public and charter schools in addition to running a private studio. I also tutor math and standardized test/SAT prep (I took the SAT's 7 times for fun as a kid).
From early childhood (0-5yo) at the MIM to elementary choirs at the Phoenix Boys Choir and Arizona Girl Choir to musical theatre productions for young actors and singers at the Pheonix Theatre to high school choirs and college choirs and young adult choirs and even a retirement community choir in East Mesa, I've worked with all kinds of singers to help them develop their voices into the most beautiful instrument possible. I've also done extensive work with bands and solo pop/rock/folk singers.
Try a single lesson with multiple teachers to find someone whose teaching style works very well for you. Lessons become far more effective when teacher and student genuinely enjoy working together.
