Frequently asked questions

I meet with the prospective student to discuss their training goals and identify what skills they already have, what they wish to acquire and establish a course of study. I develop a training program for each individual that will complement their natural abilities and develop efficiency not only in the physical aspects but also in mental aspects such as how to study, train and strategize to best meet their goals. Training cycles are tailored to suit the individual/group needs. There may also be a screening process for those who wish to pursue weapons training and train at my location.

MK CQC is the cumulative result of more than 30 years of study and practice training under the world’s leading authorities and lineage holders serve as the foundation for all of the curriculum.

My credentials include:

Training rates are based on 1-hour blocks and are determined by frequency, location, and the number of participants. This will be determined if we decide to proceed after the initial consultation.

I founded the Illinois State University Judo Club in 1995 with the permission of my teacher when I transferred there for school. I have been teaching ever since with the permission of my respective teachers.

I have taught people from all walks of life, from elementary school students to professional fighters, from regular citizens to professionals (military, police, security, etc). I offer training tailored to the individual or group, not one size fits all.

I gain a positive experience from each training session. It is a rewarding experience to help others develop skills and make them their own. Regardless of the individual or group, it is always a rewarding challenge to help others discover and achieve what they seek.

Have a realistic understanding of your training goals and objectives before seeking out a teacher.

Understand the time involved in acquiring and developing a functional skill set.

Seek a teacher that is a good fit for you and your learning style, regardless of system or branding.

Seek teachers that can help you “connect the dots” rather than teach you things that are not complementary to your existing skill sets.

Are you willing to do your “homework” between training sessions?

Is the student willing to commit to a regular training schedule?

Is the instructor able to explain, demonstrate and adapt techniques to the student's physical abilities?

Does the instructor have a realistic understanding of the difference between self-defense and sport techniques?

Is the system/style a “one-trick pony”? Or, is it capable of addressing weapons, multiple opponents and environmental considerations?
