My teaching approach:
Play, play, and play some more! I try to keep my student's hands on that guitar as much as possible. The articulate movements and coordination it takes to just play are controlled by muscle memory. And, we only develop muscle memory through repetition. For this reason, I am an advocate short amounts of daily practice. Formally playing music for over 20yrs. Guitar, over 15yrs. Gigging pro, 10yrs
