About

My teaching approach:

Beginning as a self-taught guitarist that has moved on to a formal/classical education has made me aware of some of the pitfalls misinformation and misconceptions that exist in learning guitar. I’m also well practiced at correcting improper technique having to do it myself numerous times as I became more educated. I like to imagine myself going back in time to when I was younger and teaching a young me from scratch, and try and imagine exactly what I would teach and what habits I would make myself develop in an imaginary effort to make myself a better guitarist now.

My influences are:

I started playing after hearing Carlos Santana as a teenager. By my late teens in was listening to Blink 182, Metallica, Led Zeppelin and into adulthood Steve Vai and Paul Gilbert. During my time at college studying classical music is a completely different world with Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Fernando Sor, Manuel Ponce and Francisco Tarrega.

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio

Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:

I teach weekday evenings with Skype lessons being more flexible in the evening/late evening.

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Fingerstyle, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Recording and Production, Guidance In Equipment Selection

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

First lessons can sometimes feel like an interview process for both parties. The teacher is trying to feel out the student while the student is trying to feel out the teacher to see if both will fit. If the student has played before I usually ask what they've been working on and what process they use to practice and learn a song. That usually gives me a good idea of the students abilities, interests, learning patterns and what direction they want themselves to go.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

With young students, I allow myself to be a bit more comprehensive in that I can start from the very basics from the beginning and even come up with simple games with rhythm, basic ear training and reading notation. The big challenge with young players is the actual act of physically playing the guitar and I encourage parents to invest in a quality instrument that is easy to play. I try and get my older children and teenagers to try and play something they like as early as possible to develop a passion for the instrument, but not before building an understanding of the basics.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

My ideal student is one that simply practices consistently and takes something home with them. The only time I haven't seen a student progress is when they only practice the day before or the day of a lesson. One would be surprised at what they can accomplish with just a half hour a day.
