About

HI! I'm Matt. I'm an award-winning, conservatory-trained pianist, composer, producer, and educator out of Los Angeles 🎶

Though I am a music professor at Occidental College 🤓, I enjoy teaching all ages and levels -- from aspiring beginners and music undergrads to consummate professionals and performing artists alike.

I develop custom-tailored lesson plans based on the students' unique goals & prior experience -- this includes popular genres such as classical, jazz, pop, and R&B.

I can help you learn improvisation, sight-reading, music production, ear training, and

audio engineering. Lessons are always simple, rewarding, and most importantly, fun! This is especially important if you're looking to play music instead of trudge through method-books! 🤗

For online Zoom lessons, multiple camera angles accurately resemble the hands-on experience of an in-person lesson (see pics below).

*I offer a free 20 min consultation to ensure your satisfaction with the applicable technology 👨‍💻

As a performer, I've worked and toured with some of the best -- the stars of "American Idol", "Glee", and "The Voice,” REO Speedwagon, and Engelbert Humperdinck. A myriad of notable jazz all-stars including Kamasi Washington, Clare Fischer, Bill Watrous, Eric Marienthal, and Zane Musa 🎹

My compositions can be heard in a multitude of media platforms, from various tv commercials, feature films like Big Momma's House III, various movies on The Lifetime Network, and television shows such as “Bones", “Millionaire Matchmaker" and MTV's "10 on top" 🎧

Music has been the passion of my life since I was 4 years old. It is my honor and privilege to share it with you! Please message me with any questions and I look forward to meeting you!

    “My Best Piano Teacher Ever”
Matt is a Phenomenal Jazz Piano Player, Teacher, and Mentor. He is a superb listener and is excellent with evaluating “where you’re at” and taking you, “where you want to go.” He is positive, encouraging and provides challenges to optimize your musical growth and potential. It’s all about “The Journey” – he will say. And I’m fortunate to have him on mine.
In 2 years, he has taken me from crayons to perfume! Musically speaking, from Basic Triads to Buttery Jazz Notes / Chords; to attending Jazz Sessions and becoming involved with Local Jazz workshops to gain experience with learning how to play in a combo and improve my improvisational skills - which is my goal.
However, I would never have done it, if it wasn’t for Matt motivating me to “Just go, Listen and Participate.” I’m still working on the participation piece due to my own performance anxiety, but am confident that I will get there –with Matt’s encouragement and exceptional teaching style.
If your serious about learning Jazz Piano – Matt should be “Your Teacher!”
    You won’t regret it!

Im approaching 70 and have had some wonderful teachers over the years, but Matt has by far been the best. REALLY knows his stuff. Ive come to see that teaching is not a sideline for Matt. Hes fully invested in the progress of his students. Extremely insightful. When Im having a problem he has an uncanny ability to critically analyze the situation, get to the root of my weaknesses, and devise just the right tailored approach to address it. He also has a seemingly unending supply of patience. Seriously good instruction.
