About

Hello!

My name is Cullen Griffin and I teach guitar, bass, and ukulele lessons in various styles of music and to people of all ages. I have been playing music for over 12 years now and have taught lessons throughout the last 6 years.

As someone who pushes themselves daily to further develop their musical skills, I find it very important to not only give back some of the knowledge I've acquired over the years but to also help others learn how to learn effectively and efficiently. Having spent time learning and playing in various settings, from high school jazz bands to jam sessions to recording sessions, I've been able to distill what's essential across different styles and present them in an easily digestible way, allowing for students to see the connections between their favorite music and the underlying elements of music in general.

For each student I tailor a lesson plan built around the student's long term goals. Whether its learning your favorite songs, how to write your own, or taking the steps towards mastery of the instrument, I find it very important to explore music through the artists and styles that caught your ear in the first place. In conjunction with learning your favorite music I will also show you the relevant music theory that applies to the music you love. You will not only be able to play your favorite songs, but will also know how the artists you love made them. That means the tools they used to craft songs will be at your finger tips. There's nothing more exciting then seeing a student's expression when an idea clicks and they realize that they're capable of playing and creating music too!

I really liked how passionate he is about teaching. You could tell he really loves playing and teaching music. He is also very skilled in multiple instruments so he sometimes will play bass while I play the piece I just learned. That helped me understand how to play with a groove.
I would choose Cullen over any shop guitar teacher any day.

This dude is an amazing teacher, with a captivating mane. I came to him knowing nothing and I still know nothing, however I am now well versed with the ways of the shred 🎸
Cullen knows his stuff - music theory, scales, chords, songs and handy general guitar knowledge! Ive been a student of Cullen’s for a couple years now and he has always been extremely professional, warm, patient and understanding.
If you have the intent to learn sweet new party tricks, improve techniques or simply learn the guitar - I highly recommend sir Griffin to anyone, at any level of playing!

    Frequently asked questions

With new students I usually start with a quick conversation about their experience, musical goals, and general musical interests. Through either a 10-15 minute phone call or an email, I like to get an idea of what the student is interested in so that from the first lesson we can start working on playing. If the student is looking for suggestions I'm more then happy to recommend songs and concepts, but my method is to always tailor the lessons around student goals.

I have been playing music for over 15 years and have done so in various contexts ranging from playing in high school jazz bands, my own musical groups, guitar ensembles, recording sessions and live solo work. I've also been teaching lessons throughout the last 8 years, starting with being asked to begin teaching at a former local music studio while I was in high school. I have studied various styles ranging from rock, blues, folk, jazz, soul, classical, and some Brazilian forms.

. I offer 45 minute lessons starting at $60. The introductory lesson is a standalone. If you enjoy the initial meeting and would want to continue regularly, I charge monthly. It usually works out to 4-5 lessons per month If you’re taking one a week. I teach in Long Beach but can also travel to you for additional $15 fee. If there is a need to reschedule a lesson, please give a 24-48 hour advance notice to receive a lesson credit. If you're interested in group lessons, please contact me about pricing. .

I began teaching guitar in high school after being asked to become the guitar teacher at a local music studio. I had taken lessons there when I was younger and was still in contact with the owner/primary piano teacher. He reached out to me to help him fill an empty spot at his studio. Ever since, I've realized how truly rewarding it is to give back some of the knowledge that I have. There's nothing better then seeing the excitement on a student's face when they finally nail a song that they love or understand a concept that makes the world of music instantly more comprehensible.

I've worked with a variety of different of students. I've taught children and adults at different levels of experience. Beginners and seasoned players alike are welcome! Whether you'd like to master the instrument or pick up a new hobby, I'll help you start playing and having fun as soon as possible.

A former adult student was looking to learn beginning guitar as a way to expand his hobbies and interests. I still remember the astonishment on his face when we were able to learn some of his favorite songs, write one for his mom's birthday, and begin to have him improvise while I played accompaniment. His face really lit up when he realized that he was making music on the spot.

I would advise having some defined goals set out ahead of time. They don't have to be extremely specific in terms of musical terminology. Ask yourself why you are seeking instruction. Are you taking up guitar as a hobby or are you looking to master the instrument? Are you interested in songwriting? Do you want to learn how to improvise? Do you want to play for yourself or with others? Having these goals in mind and communicating them to the instructor will go a long way towards the student's total satisfaction. Keeping that in mind, looking for the lowest priced teacher usually isn't the most beneficial for the student. Having an instructor who tailors the lessons to the students goals while also encouraging musical growth should be a priority.
