About

With over thirty-five years of experience in performing, composing, recording, and teaching, I have garnered a reputation as one of the top musical professionals in the Bay Area. As a teacher I try to bring out each student's passion for music while instilling the fundamentals of sound technique that will enable them to grow not only as a player and/or singer, but to deepen their appreciation of music and inspire creativity and to self expression.

I have been on staff at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto for over thirty years, and have taught thousands of students both privately and in group classes over that period.

As a performer and recording artist, I have four recordings s a solo artist and band leader, and frequently perform with my Brazilian jazz group Novo Tempo. I have performed at countless venues in the Bay Area and up and down the West Coast, including the San Jose Jazz Festival, Yoshi's Nightclub in Oakland, CA, Mountain View CA Center For Performing Arts, Redwood City CA Salsa Festival, Winter Music Festival, Florence OR, The Triple Door, Seattle WA, The Jazz Cellar, Vancouver B.C., Catalina's Jazz Nightclub, Los Angeles CA, Dizzy's, San Diego, and more.

What really excites me about teaching is watching the growth of a student over a period of time. Giving affirmation, encouragement, and inspiration to a student is something every teacher should want to aspire to.

I took both guitar and singing lessons from Ed on and off for a number of years, both in person and remotely. I was an intermediate/advanced guitarist and a beginner/intermediate singer when I started lessons with him. I have had guitar or voice teachers here and there over the years, but Ed has been the most effective for me by far.
I am most impressed with how quickly and easily Ed is able to zero in on very specific areas that need to be worked on to improve. He then always seems to have a useful practice technique to address the issue. This effectiveness combined with his easy going and laid back personality make lessons with him an absolute pleasure.

Ed is super friendly, calm, and very knowledgeable. He knows how to tailor lessons to my skill level and interests, and Ive made great progress in my singing and guitar playing over the past few years. You can tell how much he loves music, and he truly seems to enjoy sharing the gift of music with me. I always feel comfortable making mistakes given how supportive and encouraging he is. Im really glad Ive got Ed as a teacher!

Ed Johnson is an extremely accomplished musician while also being an extremely effective teacher. He is a true master of the guitar in wide-ranging musical styles, vocal instruction, choral arranging, songwriting, composition, music theory and music recording/production. As a teacher, is he is ambitious on his students behalf while remaining kind and patient. Well worth the investment, you cannot work with or learn from a finer musician!
