Gabriel O. says, "I've been boxing with Marlin for 6 months or so and he's a terrific instructor. I've learned so much from the experience. He's invested in the success of his clients and works hard to get you to your goal. Likewise, he's just a great person to be around. Very positive, very supportive. He's a skilled coach and fantastic boxing instructor because he focuses on mastering the fundamentals (in both Orthodox and South Paw). I'm really happy with the results so far and look forward to more. Cheers! Gabriel" Read more

I offer personal training sessions at Iron Horse Fitness in Danville, Ca. My training style is to maximize efficiency by having clients do high intensity LOW IMPACT strength training. It is safer than your typical workout because it requires the client to move as slowly as possible during an exercise with a weight that push them to their limits over a one-two minute time frame. Workout usually last 20-30 MINUTES instead of HOURS! By emphasizing time that the muscles are under TENSION we are able to recruit more surrounding muscles to help complete the full time just before failure. I like seeing people push themselves harder than they ever ha...

Your fitness questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

The price of fitness classes varies significantly depending on the class type and the gym or studio. Prices for group classes at popular gyms and studios include:

  • Planet Fitness costs $10 to $25 per month and includes unlimited access to small group classes.
  • Anytime Fitness costs $43 to $50 per month and includes unlimited access to small group classes.
  • Orangetheory Fitness costs $15 to $20 per class or $179 per month for unlimited classes.
  • Pure Barre costs $17 to $25 per class or $199 per month for unlimited classes.
  • CrossFit costs $20 to $25 per drop-in class or $150 to $200 per monthfor unlimited classes.
  • Zumba costs $59 per month for unlimited classes or $10 to $25 per class.
  • YMCA membership costs $52 to $60 per month for one adult or $86 to $119 per month for a family and includes unlimited access to a wide variety of fitness classes.

Online fitness classes cost $10 to $50 per month on average. The monthly subscription fee typically gives you unlimited access to prerecorded classes available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some subscriptions, like Peloton, also include online access to interactive live-streamed classes.

You can only use your Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for fitness classes if your physician or nurse practitioner prescribes an exercise regimen for a specific medical condition.

Your physician must write a letter of medical necessity (LMN) confirming the classes are intended to treat or prevent a medical condition, and you must provide a copy of the letter to the IRS when filing your taxes. The LMN is typically good for one year from the date it's signed. However, your physician may recommend a shorter duration.

Yes, Planet Fitness and Anytime Fitness both offer group fitness classes led by certified personal trainers. Classes at both gyms are limited to small groups to allow the trainer to provide direct coaching as needed. Most franchise locations offer these classes 10 to 14 times per day, and members can attend unlimited classes.

Group fitness classes are available in a wide variety of styles, making it easy to find one that best suits your needs. Popular class options include:

  • Cardio
  • Cycling / spinning
  • Dance
  • Kickboxing
  • Pilates
  • Yoga
  • CrossFit
  • Ballet / barre
  • Zumba
  • Water fitness
  • Strength training, including bodyweight workouts and weightlifting classes

When choosing a fitness class, first decide on your goals for the class. Are you looking to improve your cardio health, strength, endurance, mobility, or all of the above? Once you have an idea of your goals in mind, follow these tips:

  • Check out the classes available in your area to see which style most appeals to you.
  • Ask for recommendations from friends, family, and your medical provider.
  • Read the class and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Get a day pass or take a free trial class at the gym or studio.
  • Don't sign a monthly or annual contract until you've taken a free class.

When evaluating a gym or fitness studio, ask these questions to help you find the best fitness class for you:

  • What is the class schedule?
  • Do you charge by the class or by the month?
  • How many classes per month does the membership plan include?
  • Do you require members to subscribe for a minimum number of months or an annual plan?
  • Do you offer a free trial class or day pass?
  • Are your class instructors also certified personal trainers?
  • How many people are in a typical class?
  • Are there any rules about what to wear to the class?
  • Will I need to bring any equipment, like a yoga mat or towel?

When I was looking for a personal trainer, Karlynn's eyes are what caught my attention. She is very patient with me as I have had some back injuries that have slowed my progress. She listens to my needs and makes adjustments as she sees fit. She is super personable and has become a friend. I have been working with her for 6 months and have lost 30lbs. Working with her has also helped me mentally, decreased anxiety, decreased depression and an improved mood. Karlynn is worth every penny.

I came to Sifu for Traditional Shaolin training , not wushu style, which is hard to find in regular popular Kung Fu schools. I desired a Shaolin Temple monks type of training and discipline. I'm thankful to find Sifu and be provided with what I was looking for in a genuine manner, and learned so much more. I would recommend Sifu Djuan to anyone looking for traditional Shaolin in a focused, intimate and genuine program. I have taken my years of study with Sifu Djuan further in my life to becoming a QiGong teacher and Sanda coach. I am forever thankful honored to share the teachings!

I started training with Holly in 2009 and it was the best decision I have ever made. At the time, I was suffering from back problems which left me unable to do most physical activities. For anyone who is as active as I am ( surf, run, snowboard, you name it, I do it), you can imaging how awful this was. Holly and I began working out once a week doing strength training and corrective exercise. Holly's warm personality, understanding of Kinesiology, and varied training programs got me back in-action in less time then I thought. Even after my back was better I continued to train with Holly as she kept me on my toes with challenging workouts, kept me in mental and physical shape, and became a trusted friend. Training with Holly will be the best step anyone can take. I can not say enough great things about her work ethic, her engaging workouts, and overall spirit! I sing her praises to anyone I run into who is considering personal or group training. Call her, it will change your life!
