As a lead singer/guitarist, songwriter in many rock bands over 38 years, I like to stress performance. I schedule an evening review style student recital at a local coffee shop a couple of times a year. I teach a very solid and useable system of guitar neck knowledge rather than rote learning of songs and solos although, of course, we learn a lot of great songs!:) I also have a recording studio and often record student performances sometimes of their own compositions which is tremendous fun.
When learning guitar there is a definite initial technical "hump" you have to get over. It's a lot to do with the mechanical hand strength and dexterity required to get a decent noise out of the thing. It's incredibly rewarding to help a student over that hump to where they're actually making music. Because of my background I love to hear a student singing while playing and I do my utmost to create a friendly, encouraging and safe environment for them to give that a go. It makes me really happy when a student brings in songs or pieces they want to work on, doubly so if it's their own composition.
