About

I have learned many styles of music as well as extensive experience in classical music, chamber music, jazz, rock, electroacoustic and improvised styles. I also play the larger flutes, but teach mostly on my concert flute and piccolo.

Making music and teaching music is a special event that I try to do as often as possible. I also enjoy hearing my students improve and their feedback on their own musical experiences. I always learn from my students, too.

Marion is fabulous. She is extremely knowledgeable and experienced with all kinds of music, and the flute. She is great fun, and can work with different personalities and learning goals.

Calm, relaxing atmosphere, learner-oriented but she pushed me to the next level to play at the National Flute Convention. Marion has unique experience in different kinds of flutes including the base flute.

I have worked with Marion as a professional colleague in San Diego in performance and musical education teaching forums. She is highly recommended in the Southern California area for her mentoring skills with young artists. As a current and well sought after performer, she passes those valuable experiences to her students.

    Frequently asked questions

I like to find out what they know about music already- whether they can read music or count rhythms. Then we try the flute- how do they sound? What do they like to play? Is there a piece they would like to play in the future?

I have studied jazz at a community college in Canada and at CalArts. Classical in high school, college, and at California Institute of the Arts and my master's at UCSD. I have played in a Jethro Tull tribute band, at Comicon for the Eisner Awards after-party for the last 15 years (jazz and soundtrack music), with a few Canadian electroacoustic musicians and on many studio-type gigs on Airgigs.com. I also arrange mostly pop tunes from various eras and play them on Acapella- see those on my YouTube channel. I also played with Duran Duran once!

I charge $35 for half and hour and $65 for hour lessons.
I got a referral from church back in 1987.
I have worked with beginners, intermediates, and advanced students of all ages. Lately, I have a couple of intermediate players and some adults who are just getting back to playing after some time off.
Look for a person who can get you to the next level, especially if you are still in school. You should get along and the teacher should know your goals.
How can the teacher help you go further in your music goals? What piece am I capable of learning and does it take me further?
