FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

You can book online at http://www.cookwithjames.com/calendar.html or

Email us with the experience that most interests you and what dates you and your friends--or corporate colleagues--are available. All experiences start at $125 - $135 a person (varies according to menu and number of courses) per person and include detailed, step-by-step recipes. A minimum of 4 guests are required for this pricing. If your group is only 2 guests you may pay a $150 upgrade fee to make the evening private for just the two of you. For groups of 4 or more a 20% gratuity will be added. You are welcome to bring with you wine or spirits to have over the course of the evening. A typical experience lasts about 3 to 3.5 hours.

We are happy to customize the dinner--or lunch--to your liking (below are just a few examples of our more popular offerings – we can do nearly anything Italian or Spanish). All cooking class parties include appetizers and a fantastic dessert from Spain called La Quesada (think cheesecake meets flan). We can accommodate vegetarian diets.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

17 years cooking and 7 years running CookWithJames as a full-time business. I have studied and trained in Spain and Italy and also did an 8-month "stage" at Michelin-star Quince Restaurant in San Francisco.

How did you get started teaching?

James earned a masters in Spanish literature and linguistics through Middlebury College and lived in Spain for two years. He later entered into the technology business and worked at various advertising agencies in San Francisco over a 12 year period. Along the way he started cooking as "therapy" for his corporate day job. CookWithJames was created 15 years ago as an underground supper club. James would prepare multiple course regional Italian and Spanish dinners in his home for guests and friends. James staged at Quince restaurant after they opened in 2004, and has also lived and cooked in both Italy and Spain. After leaving his day job in advertising in 2009 James launched CookWithJames as a full-time business, offering private sit-down dinners as well as cooking class parties for all occasions.
