About

Hello aspiring pianists! I have recently relocated to San Francisco after 31 years abroad where I toured to over 125 countries as soloist and teacher. I also run summer academies for pianists for the past 18 years in the Middle East. My goal as a teacher is to nurture your passion for music and provide the practical support you need to grow your technique and interpretative skills while expanding your knowledge of the piano repertoire. I also like to use improvisation in my teaching. I studied in France with Nadia Boulanger in the 70s and with Edith Lateiner-Grosz in Amsterdam in the 80s. I am also experienced in helping teachers with their pedagogical skills, preparing students for competitions and entrance auditions, and providing career advice on international teaching and performing opportunities. I primarily travel to students' homes for their lessons. I can teach in French, Dutch, and German if that is useful. Working knowledge of Thai and Arabic as well.

I truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and dedication in working with me as a senior beginner. Your ability to meet me where I am and adjust your teaching style to suit my learning pace has made all the difference. You’ve created such a comfortable and encouraging environment for me to grow, and I never feel rushed or overwhelmed. I’m grateful for how you bring both skill and kindness to each lesson, making the learning process so enjoyable and fulfilling!

    **Simpler and Honest Review:**
John Ferguson is a great piano teacher for both kids and adults. He’s patient, professional, and makes lessons fun while still helping you improve.
What I really like is how he adjusts his teaching to fit each student’s needs—whether you’re a beginner or getting back into piano after a long break. He makes learning comfortable and enjoyable.
His lessons mix technique, theory, and creativity, focusing on understanding music rather than just memorizing notes. He also keeps students motivated by exploring different styles, offering performance chances (if you want them), and celebrating progress.
John truly cares about his students, and it shows in his teaching. If you’re looking for a skilled and supportive piano teacher, I highly recommend him!
