Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Every new encounter with a new student is exciting indeed for both sides.
That's why I think it's important to listen carefully to the individual wishes my student might have and to get to know each other in a friendly and warm environment.
As a German Native I'm delighted to provide classes not only in English but also in German according to my students' background and wishes.
Furthermore, I am experienced with a 100% pass rate to prepare my students for globally renowned ABRSM exams in Cello, Piano and Singing on all levels.
Graded Music Exams are a most wonderful reward and personal goal, they help to nurture a love for music and to inspire achievement in it.
But music is always incredibly rewarding, with or without exams. So the JOY of experiencing and sharing music always comes first !
Lastly, let's don't forget, I am always curious to "assess" my student in the very first class in case he or she is not a total beginner anymore.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my training as Classical Opera Singer at the Royal Academy of Music in Lübeck, Northern Germany.
Apart from Opera I also studied Cello, Piano and Educational Music graduating with a BMus Hons in 1997.
My first piano lessons I received at the age of 5, at the age of 9 I learned my first orchestra instrument (cello) .
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I am happy to offer Introductory Courses in the very beginning. They are often under a special discount.
These courses embrace 8 classes in total and enable the student to get a much better picture of me and my teaching approach in comparison to a single trial lesson.
After these 8 classes the student can decide much better whether he or she wishes to move forwards.
How did you get started teaching?
I actually started teaching fairly early, at the age of 13.
My teacher asked me one day if I could assist him as he would not be able anymore to accept new clients . And so it all started ...
During my studies at the Royal Academy I was blessed with a sufficient amount of students in order to finance my training. I also established and conducted three choirs in town as a further source of income and precious experience.
What types of students have you worked with?
My youngest ever student was nearly 5 years old when she started learning the piano, my eldest a 74 yr old gentleman from the local church choir, who asked for singing lessons.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Despite a large number of private students , I had recently another stage performance myself.
A playwright asked me to play the role of an Opera Singer in his theatre play, including the live performance of two arias, one of them the famous "Song to the Moon" from the Opera Rusalka by A. Dvorak.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Trust your intuition.
If you come across someone and you like what you see and read in their profile, it's often already a good sign.
Especially when you start talking to each other on the phone, you will feel it instantly whether you both 'click' - and that's an important part of the journey. You learn best when you enjoy the work together.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Usually a teacher wants to know the level of experience the student might already bring - even if the learning took place a long time ago.
That might include various musical experiences like having sung in a choir, a family member/friend who might have inspired as a musically active role model....and also, which books have been used so far, which piece has been played lastly and whether any grades have been taken so far.
