I have always loved the guitar and music as a way to express myself and enjoyed the camaraderie of a group of people sharing that interest. In the 80's I toured with The Original Drifters for 2 years before going to Musicians Institute of Hollywood for a year in 1989. That experience taught me so much more about what I wanted to do with music. I use all of what I learned as a performer, teacher, producer and songwriter. I have performed in Scandinavia, Italy, the Caribbean Islands and toured across the US. Upon moving to Boulder in 1996 I began teaching music in Louisville CO. I continue today and still love interacting with students and find ... View Profile

So You Wanna Play Guitar

So You Wanna Play Guitar

My approach for a beginning student is to find the songs that they really want to play and to teach them how to play these songs in the easiest possible way. Guitar Philosophy 1. PATTERNS – This refers to the fact that guitar is an instrument that can be played somewhat easily by memorizing left hand patterns. A guitarist can play alot of music this way and have only a very limited knowledge of notes and theory. 2. NOTES – This refers to the fretboard and actually knowing the names of the notes on any fret. Having this knowledge links the pattern orientation of guitaring with theory and the objective perspective of music shared by all ... View Profile

My teaching approach: I tailor the lessons to individual student. It's important to come up with a lesson plan and write it down so that progress can be gauged. I believe the ability to read music is a huge advantage to any musician. Theory is just as important because if a musician learns the "whys" of music, it will make the "hows" that much easier. Technique is also a big focus. I have taught over 200 students in my career and have a strong knowledge of many styles as well as theory. I make the lessons fun and un-intimidating. Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

So You Wanna Play Guitar?

Christopher Macor · Boulder, CO

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

I was called to teach by a friend of mine. He was wanting to play guitar and he offer to gather some students together and have me teach a beginner class.

What do you love most about your job?

I love to take a person`s inspiration to play a popular song and make it real. Motivation is half of what it takes. Along with some discipline and the right strategy (teacher), people can be very fulfilled playing music.

What types of students have you worked with?

I've taught preschoolers and seniors and everyone in between. Actually, I was a Montessori teacher for numerous years so I have a lot of experience with children. This is where I learned about the importance of motivation and making the lesson concrete. This is why I focus on specific songs, songs that the student would die to be able to play. The aspirant highly motivated and the process of learning is led by this motivation.

Tell us about your passion for teaching:

I love expression, whether it's musical, artistic, literary, theatrical or dancing. The word HUMAN is two words HU and MAN. HU is an Egyptian word for God. Man refers to the mammals that we are. We are a hybrid of what is here and now and what is beyond. Expression gives voice to both these parts of us, the parts that are innately ourselves and to a vast repository of our potential. In addition, music is uniquely expressive because it can incorporate all of the art forms (think of a music video)!

What advice would you give aspiring students?

Pick music that you love. Practice at least three times a week for at least 15 minutes a session but no longer than an hour. When you get to bottlenecks ( places where the flow of the song slows down ), loop that transition, from the last chord before the bottleneck to the chord where it starts to move faster again. Keep practicing. When we stay focused, we can't see our progress as well but it`s actually when we`re having the most advancement.
