Kathleen's Piano Studio

About

Music has been my passion ever since I can remember. To me, there is nothing more satisfying than teaching another student who loves music. I taught piano lessons over 30 years ago but stopped when I had my first child. Once my children were raised, I decided to start teaching again in 2015. My degree is in Music Education and I studied Music Therapy for three years. My instrument is the piano. I completely tailor every lesson to my students individually. While I teach out of method books, I also incorporate songs that they love, that has the Theory that they are studying at the moment. This makes learning the Theory more enjoyable and they appreciate the importance of Theory. Since the CoVid pandemic started, I committed myself to learn online teaching and I mostly teach online now. I have an overhead camera for viewing the keyboard and my hands. I screen share using digital music and use the annotation tool to point to or circle certain aspects of the music. Parents love that they don't have to drive their children to lessons and can observe the lessons from the comforts of their home. I have done in-person recitals but recently I did my first prerecorded online recital. I look forward to continuing to learn new strategies to enhance my student's experiences with their piano lessons.

My daughter has been a student of Kathleen’s for about 3 years now. She is such a compassionate, patient teacher. My daughter has progressed in piano faster than I ever expected and know it’s due to Kathleen’s amazing teaching technique.

Kathleen is an excellent teacher. My daughter loves her. It is obvious that she loves teaching piano. She is dependable, organized and always on time. My daughter and I both know exactly what to expect from week to week. She goes above and beyond to facilitate not only theory and learning to play but also enjoyment of playing as well. I rarely have to tell my daughter to practice. She wants to and I believe that has almost everything to do with Kathleen’s approach to teaching. Furthermore, she has educated herself on the best ways to use technology for virtual learning. We love it!

Kathleen is able to create amazing connections with her students. She is incredibly intuitive and knows just when to push kids a bit harder as well as when to relax and switch gears. She makes learning a challenging instrument fun!

    Frequently asked questions

When working with a new student, I like to get related to them.  I ask them what kind of music they like, who are their favorite artist or composers.  I check to see if either parent plays an instrument.   I also ask if they enjoy sports, the arts such as dance,  theatre, gymnastics etc...  I also ask them what movies they like, especially if the movies have music.  I then will check out their experience with music such have they had past lessons, are they in an ensemble, do they play another instrument and can they read one or more clefs.  After that information, I will be able to determine their level and what books to recommend.  I also ask them what songs would they like to learn.

Besides my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education,  I also speak Spanish at a Biliqual level, have been in many choirs, had Teaching Music Online training recently as well as other online music training courses.

I just decided to teach.  It was a natural transition for me as I was raised in a large family and was used to being around people of all ages.  I had taught in preschools, taught gymnastics, exercise and aerobic classes to adults, helped to mentor newly diagnosed cancer patients. Teaching and mentoring has always felt very natural to me.

I have taught students from the age of 6 to 70 years old.  I particularly love teaching early intermediate children and adults.

I am not sure if this question applies to my teaching or any event so I will share about my experience watching "The Piano Guys" at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. On a beautiful summer evening in one of the most endeared natural rock formation outdoor theaters, surrounded by music lovers and watching the incredibly talented Piano guys is a treasured memory as this is the last live music performance that I saw before the pandemic shutdown.

I recommend that the teacher,  students as well as parents set up an interview and go over every question possible to make sure that all of you are a good fit.  Ask about teaching style, cost, contracts, expectations from the parent, student and teacher and requirements etc...
