Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Signing up could not be easier! Creative Roots is open each day of the week. Let Calee know which day works best, she'll send some time options, and we'll be all set for your free trial lesson.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Over the last 20 years, Calee has studied various instruments including piano, voice, guitar, marching bass drum, trumpet, baritone, and tuba.
Through her first years of college, she double-majored in Vocal Performance and Music Education, eventually earning a degree in Professional Music. These years, coupled with her training as an adolescent, equipped Calee with all of the tools she needs to become a professional musician. Through these years, she learned writing, arranging, and recording skills; piano and singing skills in various genres; how to professionaly lead a rehearsal; and most importantly, she learned how to pass her knowledge on to you :)
After college, Calee was fortunate enough to be invited back to teach full-time at The School for Music Vocations. Here, she taught a variety of courses including Music Theory, Recording Studio, nationally touring vocal jazz ensembles, a regionally touring concert choir, as well as private lessons in jazz voice, classical voice, and classical piano.
In 2017, Calee moved from small-town Iowa to Denver to open a private lesson studio and to pursue her music career. Currently, she teaches piano, voice, and music theory lessons full-time at Creative Roots Music Studio & Denver Music Institute.

What types of students have you worked with?
Probably every student you could think of! One of Calee's favorite parts of the job is that every student is unique. She's worked with all ages from 4 to 80; she's worked with students who have no idea what "middle C" means, students who are prepping for auditions and college entrance exams, students who want to sing and accompany themselves on either piano, guitar, or ukulele, students who want to write and record their own music, students who want to work fundamentals and sight-reading skills. You name it, she's taught it.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you enjoy your lessons! "Play" is the root word of music, so find an instructor that guides you through the techniques, but also allows you to have fun, relax, and play every once in a while :)
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What kind of music would you like to study?
What are some end goals for lessons?
How fast would you like to grow?
